Summary

The Senior Lead Asset Manager provides strategic and operational oversight of Greenbrier’s owned and managed railcar assets. The role leads the Asset Management team, oversees shop performance, manages customer escalations, and supports fleet reliability, service levels, and customer requirements.

 

The position leads and develops Asset Managers and Senior Asset Managers and provides strategic planning and execution oversight across the fleet. The role evaluates estimates and invoices for accuracy, cost control, and alignment with customer requirements; coordinates with internal Leasing and Fleet Management groups; and serves as a liaison among leadership, customers, vendors, and repair shops. The position applies technical expertise and operational judgment to support decisions, reinforces compliance with established Asset Management procedures, and directs continuous improvement of standard operating procedures, workflows, and operating standards.

 

The role is responsible for team effectiveness, timely resolution of escalations, maintenance budget adherence, shop performance, repair-cycle efficiency, accurate operational reporting, and consistent application of Asset Management standards. Will have direct reports and is responsible for their performance management.

 

The Senior Lead Asset Manager works closely with the Asset Management Program Planner and provides backup support for program setup, Scope of Work and bid coordination, and program kickoff activities during absences or periods of high program volume.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Team Leadership, People Development, Workload Management

• Provide leadership and mentorship to Asset Managers and Senior Asset Managers, fostering skill development, strategic thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
• Lead the onboarding, training, and performance development of new team members, ensuring fluency in SOPs, systems, and Greenbrier best practices.
• Responsible for their team's performance management.
• Drive continuous improvement by contributing to the development, refinement, and rollout of SOPs, workflows, and operational standards.
• Act as a subject matter expert on technical and procedural issues across the organization.

Customer Escalations & Operational Management

• Function as the principal liaison for high-level asset condition updates, escalations, and resolution planning with customers, repair shops, and internal departments.
• Serve as the senior ASM point of escalation for repair execution, shop performance, vendor coordination, and customer-impacting operational issues, making decisions within established authority levels and escalating commercial, financial, or regulatory matters when required.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal Greenbrier teams, ensuring transparency and alignment across Asset Management, Operations, Sales, and CX.
• Represent the Asset Management function in leadership meetings, cross-functional workgroups, customer briefings, and industry forums.

Shop Performance Management & Cost Control

• Lead high-level analysis of shop performance, identifying cost trends, performance anomalies, and maintenance optimization opportunities.
• Approve and audit complex repair estimates and invoicing from repair shops and mobile service providers, ensuring adherence to AAR/FRA regulations, Greenbrier standards, and cost-effectiveness targets.
• Oversee the coordination of bad order and program cars through repair cycles, streamlining workflows via Greenbrier's asset management systems.
• Direct and authorize scrapping processes for end-of-life assets, ensuring alignment with strategic disposition plans and regulatory guidelines.

Strategic Planning & Execution Oversight

• Provide strategic oversight of Greenbrier's railcar fleet, ensuring performance optimization, lifecycle planning, and regulatory compliance.
• Leverage advanced fleet analytics to assess overall program health, diagnose cost drivers, and develop strategic corrective actions to improve availability, reliability, and cost reduction.
• Provide executive-level oversight of program execution once handed off from the Asset Management Program Planner, ensuring alignment with technical and commercial objectives established at kickoff.
• Ensure accurate, real-time reporting of mechanical events, maintenance programs, repair progress, and asset movement using Greenbrier systems.
• Monitor regulatory changes and industry best practices, implementing required updates across the Asset Management team to ensure continuous compliance.
• Perform periodic railcar inspections to validate physical and mechanical condition and confirm alignment with maintenance records and standards.

Overflow Estimate & Invoice Support

• Provide overflow estimate and invoice review and approval support during peak demand periods, in partnership with the Asset Management Program Planner.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
• Minimum 7-10 years of progressive rail industry experience required, with a focus on railcar maintenance, asset management, or repair operations. Experience coordinating technical projects with multiple stakeholders strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience directly leading, coaching, and developing employees in a technical or operational environment.
• Advanced proficiency in Excel and demonstrated ability to interpret operational and financial data, identify trends, and translate findings into action. Experience using Power BI, Salesforce, Enspire, workflow automation, or AI-enabled productivity tools is strongly preferred. Familiarity with rail asset management systems and processes preferred.
• Experience with Salesforce, PowerBI, and Enspire preferred, particularly in operational or asset management contexts.
• Strong analytical and strategic decision-making in technical, high-volume environments
• Excellent communicator with ability to influence across functions and levels
• Proactive, self-directed, and highly organized leader
• Skilled in managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines
• Committed to delivering exceptional internal and external customer service

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of AAR and FRA regulations strongly preferred.
