SUMMARY
The part-time Mental Health Care Specialist (MHCS) supports the mental health department by engaging potential patients via SBIRTs (i.e., Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment), processing and scheduling referrals to mental health (MH), answering and processing incoming telephone calls for MH, and supports LACHC’s mission “to follow Christ by loving and serving our neighbors through comprehensive, quality healthcare” in all job duties and responsibilities and demonstrate Christ-like behavior and attitude. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include but are not limited to the following: (Other duties may be assigned.)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include:
- Use effective communication skills to build rapport with vulnerable and homeless clients.
- Process referrals and requests for services to the MH Dept.
- Assist with networking with local organizations for referrals to the MH Dept
- Conduct SBIRTs for wellness checks and to motivate/engage potential clients, including telephoning patients who were discharged from hospitalization for mental health and substance use/alcohol issues.
- Document SBIRT visits on eClinicalWorks within 3 business days from the dates of service.
- Triage patients who are referred to the MH Department daily (for urgency).
- Check therapists’ schedules daily and communicate with MH providers for openings to schedule new client appointments promptly.
- Maintain a high accuracy rate when entering information into eClinicalWorks.
- Follow proper telephone etiquette and protocol when answering & processing phone calls.
- Manages necessary paperwork for clients (e.g., letters to patients) and sends them to clients as needed.
- Scan required documentation into eClinicalWorks for mental health patients per protocol.
- Mail referral packets and paperwork (e.g., consent forms) to clients as needed.
- Communicates patient complaints to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist with data gathering and maintain logs (e.g., a log of referrals from partnering local missions) as needed
- Fill and stock patient lobbies with various handouts (e.g., devotionals, flyers, brochures) regularly
- Assists with clinic activities involving the MH Dept as needed (e.g., client groups)
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task; well-organized
- Must be CPR certified.
- Ability to type 40 wpm preferred.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor degree preferred. At least 1 year prior experience working with patients in a health care setting preferred. Prior case management experience preferred. Prior experience working with the homeless, substance using, or chronically mentally ill individuals preferred.
COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE
Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Excel preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Familiarity with medical terms and operations of clinics useful. Proficiency in English required. Spanish-speaking preferred.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as totals, proportions and percentages.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
