Fleet Mechanic

• Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair municipal vehicles and equipment.

• Perform preventive maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacement, and scheduled servicing.

• Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.

• Perform brake, tire, battery, cooling-system, and exhaust-system repairs.

• Use diagnostic equipment, service manuals, and computerized systems to identify mechanical and electrical problems.

• Maintain and repair light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks, vans, utility vehicles, and specialized equipment.

• Service heavy equipment such as loaders, excavators, mowers, tractors, and other public-works machinery, as applicable.

• Conduct safety inspections and identify vehicles or equipment requiring repair before returning them to service.

• Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts, labor, mileage, and preventive maintenance.

• Order or recommend parts, supplies, and replacement components.

• Test-drive or operate vehicles and equipment after repairs to verify proper operation.

• Respond to breakdowns and perform roadside or field repairs when necessary.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and properly use shop tools and equipment.

• Follow applicable safety procedures, environmental regulations, and manufacturer specifications.

• Assist with fleet inventory, vehicle assignments, equipment tracking, and replacement recommendations.

• Communicate with supervisors and department personnel regarding vehicle condition, repair needs, and expected downtime.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Completion of high school supplemented by course work in automotive and electrical trade skills, and highly experienced in repairing automotive and power equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

• *Additional salary increases possible with approved certifications obtained.

Special Requirements:

• Valid North Carolina driver's license.

• May require possession of a North Carolina vehicle inspection license within six months of employment.

• Background records check, drug screen, and references will be required for the successful candidate.
