General Description (Purpose and Function)

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery within the Department of Surgery at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine is seeking an accomplished cardiac surgeon for the position of Associate Professor and Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated expertise in robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery and will play a pivotal role in advancing the Division’s strategic growth initiatives focused on innovative surgical therapies and clinical excellence.

In addition to joining a growing academic cardiac surgery program, the selected candidate will be charged with establishing and leading a comprehensive robotic cardiac surgery program at UHealth Tower, one of South Florida’s premier academic medical centers. As Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery, the candidate will provide leadership in program development, physician engagement, multidisciplinary collaboration, strategic planning, quality improvement, and regional referral network expansion, helping position UHealth as a destination center for robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

The Division is committed to delivering state-of-the-art cardiovascular care through a culture of collaboration, innovation, education, and research. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth of advanced cardiac surgical services while providing comprehensive care for patients with coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, structural heart disease, and other complex cardiovascular conditions.

This faculty member will work closely with cardiac surgeons, interventional and non-invasive cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists, advanced practice providers, and allied health professionals to advance minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery across the health system while supporting the academic missions of patient care, education, research, and innovation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Job responsibilities include participation in clinical, educational, scholarly, and administrative activities as they relate to the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Department of Surgery.

  • Serve as Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery and provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and growth of a comprehensive robotic cardiac surgery program at UHealth Tower.

  • Lead programmatic initiatives related to clinical operations, quality outcomes, physician engagement, multidisciplinary collaboration, patient access, and regional referral network development to establish UHealth as a destination center for robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

  • Develop and implement clinical protocols, patient selection criteria, quality metrics, and standardized care pathways to support a high-performing robotic cardiac surgery program.

  • Collaborate with hospital leadership, perioperative services, cardiology, anesthesia, nursing, and operational teams to optimize robotic surgical infrastructure, resource utilization, and program growth.

  • Provide comprehensive adult cardiac surgical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Perform advanced cardiac surgical procedures, including robotic and minimally invasive coronary revascularization, mitral and tricuspid valve repair or replacement, surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, and other complex cardiac procedures consistent with the surgeon’s expertise.

  • Participate in outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary valve conferences, structural heart meetings, cardiovascular case review conferences, and other collaborative patient care forums.

  • Conduct daily inpatient rounds and provide perioperative management of assigned patients throughout their hospitalization.

  • Collaborate with cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and ancillary personnel to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care.

  • Participate in the cardiac surgery call schedule and provide emergency and urgent cardiac surgical coverage as assigned.

  • Serve as a clinical leader in the adoption and advancement of innovative surgical technologies, minimally invasive treatment strategies, and robotic cardiac surgical techniques.

  • Support and lead quality improvement initiatives focused on clinical outcomes, patient safety, operational efficiency, patient experience, and value-based care.

  • Participate in morbidity and mortality conferences, root cause analyses, peer review activities, and other performance improvement initiatives across all sites of service.

  • Represent the robotic cardiac surgery program through physician outreach, community engagement, marketing initiatives, and regional, national, and international academic collaborations.

  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, operating room personnel, and junior faculty members in clinical practice and robotic cardiac surgical techniques.

  • Participate in clinical research, outcomes research, investigator-initiated studies, scholarly publications, presentations, and national professional society activities.

  • Contribute to departmental strategic planning, faculty development, academic program growth, and the achievement of institutional goals.

  • Assist in obtaining and maintaining national quality recognitions, accreditations, and programmatic distinctions.

  • Provide professional medical services twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, three hundred sixty-five (365) days per year in collaboration with other faculty members within the Division.
