Job Summary

The Shop Foreman is the hands-on, day-to-day leader of the Tidy Services maintenance shop. This position directs mechanic workflow, establishes repair priorities, supports and coaches technicians, and ensures repairs and preventive maintenance are completed safely, efficiently, and correctly.

This is a working foreman position, not an administrative-only supervisory role. The Shop Foreman will continue performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on cars, trucks, and off-road equipment while providing daily leadership to the shop team.

The Shop Foreman reports to the Fleet Manager and is responsible for keeping mechanics productive, maintaining repair quality, moving scheduled preventive maintenance through the shop, and communicating major shop issues or delays.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Shop Foreman include, but are not limited to:

  • Shop Leadership and Workflow
  • Direct the daily work of mechanics and technicians.
  • Assign repair and preventive-maintenance work based on fleet needs, technician capabilities, parts availability, and operational priorities.
  • Prioritize and sequence repairs to return vehicles and equipment to service safely and efficiently.
  • Adjust daily assignments as breakdowns, emergency repairs, or operational needs arise.
  • Provide hands-on technical support, troubleshooting, coaching, and training to mechanics.
  • Monitor work in progress and address delays, performance issues, and workflow problems.
  • Communicate major equipment failures, repair delays, staffing concerns, parts constraints, and recurring problems to the Fleet Manager.
  • Maintain daily shop cleanliness, organization, bay discipline, tool accountability, and safe work practices.
  • Set a professional example for safety, productivity, workmanship, documentation, and teamwork.

Repair Quality and Preventive Maintenance

  • Verify that repairs and preventive-maintenance work are completed correctly and to established standards.
  • Review completed work and perform or require final operational testing before vehicles and equipment are returned to service.
  • Reduce comebacks and repeat repairs through effective diagnosis, mechanic support, and quality control.
  • Coordinate the daily execution of the preventive-maintenance schedule.
  • Ensure scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance move through the shop on time.
  • Examine vehicles and equipment to identify additional safety concerns or required repairs.
  • Support the Fleet Manager by identifying recurring failures, equipment-condition concerns, and opportunities to improve fleet reliability.

Hands-On Mechanical Work

  • Perform maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs on cars, trucks, and off-road equipment in a safe, efficient, and quality-minded manner.
  • Perform repair work involving breakdowns, malfunctions, and emergency roadside service.
  • Perform operational tests before repairs to verify reported problems.
  • Diagnose malfunctions and complete repairs according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, clutches, suspension and steering systems, gasoline and diesel fuel systems, ignition systems, electrical systems, brakes, and HVAC systems.
  • Handle difficult diagnoses and complex repairs while assisting other mechanics with technical problems.
  • Perform required inspections and preventive maintenance to maximize vehicle and equipment safety, productivity, reliability, and service life.
  • Perform State Safety Inspections.
  • Perform truck preventive maintenance, including fluid changes, lubrication, safety inspections, and brake repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on off-road equipment, including lubrication, adjustments, cutting-tip replacement, and safety inspections.
  • Perform final operational tests to confirm the quality and completeness of repairs.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment are kept clean and are washed after repairs are completed.

Parts, Warranty, and Documentation

  • Identify and specify the parts required to complete repairs.
  • Assist with immediate parts sourcing and vendor coordination when necessary to keep repairs moving.
  • Follow established parts-ordering, purchasing, and billing procedures.
  • Identify warranty opportunities and parts that require core returns.
  • Save, label, protect, and properly segregate warranty and core parts.
  • Ensure mechanics document the correct vehicle mileage or equipment hours.
  • Ensure all work orders accurately document the complaint, cause, and correction.
  • Confirm that repair records are complete before work orders are closed.
  • Provide the Fleet Manager with information regarding repair status, parts constraints, recurring failures, and potential waste or cost concerns.
