An Industry Leader With a Heart as Big as Its Ambition and Innovation
At Victaulic, we're committed to constructing a better world for and with our people.
Let's Build a Better World Together.
Our commitment to our people is built on four pillars:
- We build from within.
- We stand behind our people.
- We foster an environment for constant learning.
- We engineer change for a more stable and sustainable world.
YOUR IMPACT STARTS HERE
We're looking for an Infrastructure Estimating Engineer to join our dedicated Infrastructure Support Team within Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Estimating, reporting to the Manager, Estimating – VDC. In this role, you'll own Infrastructure Tech Review: the technical readiness and risk gate for Infrastructure estimating. You'll decide whether an opportunity is ready to estimate, interpret specifications, and identify technical and commercial risk before material takeoff hours are committed, applying engineering and fabrication judgment inside the estimating function to improve scope clarity, pricing confidence, and pursuit quality. The primary accountability is estimating support, not project execution. This role is expected to grow into a senior Infrastructure estimating leadership position, with more influence over estimating strategy and long-term ownership of the Infrastructure estimating business.
WHAT YOU'LL BUILD & OWN
Technical Review Decisions
- Decide whether a request is complete enough to estimate, or goes on hold or back to Sales.
- Determine whether the work needs modeling or document-only estimating, and the estimating material take-off hours required to perform it.
- Define scope boundaries and the assumptions that must be clarified with Sales.
- Identify risks significant enough to affect bid/no-bid, margin, or pursuit strategy, and decide when to escalate them.
Infrastructure Tech Review
- Review project specifications for scope requirements, exclusions, and risk drivers across Ductile Iron, Stainless Steel, and Carbon Steel projects in the United States and Canada.
- Cover American Water Works Association requirements, coatings and linings, materials, pressure and reinforcement, nondestructive examination and radiography, passivation, Professional Engineer–stamped procedures, and American Iron and Steel and Build America, Buy America compliance, and determine fabrication feasibility.
- Raise risks at Tech Review, coordinating with Fabrication Quality Assurance and Quality Control on risks and red flags that could alter the status of the quote.
- Maintain the Infrastructure Estimating Risk Log with owner, status, and mitigation for each active item.
- Use the VDC artificial intelligence Spec Agent to support specification interpretation, producing a standardized report.
Sales Interface
- Serve as Sales' primary technical contact during pursuits on assumptions, feasibility, and scope.
- Own Sales issues directly.
- Hold the line on incomplete or unclear requests and return them for clarification.
PMD Communication
- Act as the point of contact with PMD for questions such as, but not limited to, American Water Works Association Manual M11 questions, wall calculations, and reinforcement calculations, and carry the results into the review.
Secondary Responsibilities
As needed, and only when coordinated so they don't compete with estimating priorities:
- Provide limited subject matter support on American Water Works Association standards, coatings and linings, fabrication shop capabilities, and project-specific piping questions.
- Perform targeted quality checks: flow, layout, FAB MAP, and spool checks.
- Advise VDC infrastructure coordinators, without taking on execution or delivery ownership.
- Assist Project Execution and Fabrication with non-Victaulic submittals.
Key Interfaces
- Sales—primary interface; you own technical issues and clarifications.
- PMD—American Water Works Association Manual M11 questions, wall and reinforcement calculations.
- Estimating team—hand off qualified, scoped requests with assigned hours.
- VDC infrastructure coordinators—advisory only.
- Fabrication Quality Assurance and Quality Control—coordinate on risks and red flags that could alter the status of the quote.
- Project Execution—assist with non-Victaulic submittals, together with Fabrication.
- Engineering and Quality—as needed.
How Success Is Measured
- Early risk capture: risks identified at Tech Review rather than during design, building information modeling coordination, or after award.
- Risk log quality: every active item has an owner, status, and mitigation path if awarded.
- Turnaround and backlog: days from Tech Review request to complete, and open Infrastructure reviews at week's end.
Out of Scope
- Day-to-day VDC project execution.
- Ownership of fabrication, shop production, or project deliverables.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Extensive experience in engineering, fabrication, or water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Strong ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and industry standards, including American Water Works Association standards.
- Demonstrated judgment in identifying technical and commercial risk, and in translating engineering detail into estimating and business impact.
- Confidence to push back on Sales with clear reasons, and to influence decisions without direct ownership.
- Comfort learning and using software tools used in Tech Review and specification review.
WHAT SETS YOU APART
- Working knowledge of ductile iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel piping systems, coatings and linings, and pipe fabrication.
- Engineering degree or equivalent job experience.
- Experience with shop prefabrication, American Water Works Association Manual M11, welding and nondestructive examination requirements, and American Iron and Steel and Build America, Buy America compliance.
- Familiarity with Canadian infrastructure codes and standards.
- Prior experience in estimating or pre-construction.
