IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting closes at 11:59:59 PM the night BEFORE the End Date listed.

This Public Safety Attorney I position will individually litigate cases for the Public Safety Section from start to finish in federal and state courts from federal civil rights claims to personnel actions. This position provides professional litigation services, legal analysis, and thoughtful, meaningful legal advice to mid-level, senior, and executive managers of client agencies and internally at NC DOJ. The client agencies include the Department of Public Safety, State Highway Patrol, State Bureau of Investigation, and Adult Corrections. This position may also assist other attorneys in the section on complex matters in the areas of civil rights law. This position shares responsibility with several other attorney positions for providing all legal support services and such other duties as assigned.

This is a hybrid remote position, requiring a combination of in-office and remote work.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

* 2-3 years of progressive civil litigation experience preferred.

* Experience presenting in court preferred.

* Legal research and writing experience preferred, including drafting motions and discovery requests and responses.

* Demonstrated experience in civil rights litigation, personnel actions, and/or high volume practice preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. See the Education and Experience Equivalency Guide for details.

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar.

NOTE: GS 114-2 and 114-6 make it the duty of the Attorney General of NC to represent the State of North Carolina in all litigation unless another statute specifically states otherwise.
