Laboratory Assistant

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Laboratory Assistant, you will work primarily in the laboratory specimen processing and intake department. You will provide essential support through specimen management and clerical duties, ensuring all samples are handled accurately and efficiently to support overall laboratory operations.

 

Every day you will perform specimen processing and, as required, blood collection for various patient populations. Depending on local and state regulations and departmental organization, you may also perform CLIA-waived or moderately complex laboratory testing to ensure timely results for our patients.

 

To be successful in this role, you will maintain a focus on accuracy and teamwork while adhering to established technical policies. Your ability to handle specimens with care, follow precise laboratory procedures, and communicate effectively with your colleagues will be vital to maintaining the high standards of our department.

• Patient Safety and Interaction: Practices positive patient identification at all times and demonstrates HumanKindness and courtesy in all patient and co-worker interactions, while maintaining effective communication across departments.

• Specimen Management and Processing: Processes and organizes laboratory specimens for internal distribution and testing, ensuring samples are moved efficiently; manages all aspects of external send-out testing, including documentation and packaging according to established procedures.

• Phlebotomy and Training: Performs venous and capillary blood collections on all age groups, including blood bank collections, utilizing appropriate techniques and volume requirements; assists with phlebotomy training as directed by leadership.

• Laboratory Testing and Analysis: Performs CLIA-waived and moderately complex testing following technical policies; evaluates result validity by assessing quality control, instrument performance, specimen integrity, and patient history under the direction of a Clinical Lab Scientist.

• Departmental Workflow and Operations: Takes responsibility for department workflow and efficiency, fostering a collaborative team atmosphere; uses sound judgment in problem-solving and requests assistance when necessary.

• Equipment and Inventory Maintenance: Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment with accurate documentation; monitors supply inventory, maintains stocking levels, and completes reagent logs.

 

Job Requirements

Required

• High School Diploma/G.E.D.
• BLS-CPR within 90 days

Preferred

• Lab Assistant Program certification
• Phlebotomy program certificate
• Six (6) months experience in an acute care facility
