Summary of Job Duties:
The Department of Geosciences seeks applications for an Endowed Associate Professor or Professor of Geosciences, with a record of accomplishments consistent with tenured status at the University of Arkansas. The hire will be named the inaugural Dr. T.A. “Mac” McGilvery, Karen R. McGilvery and Maurice F. Storm Field Experience Endowed Chair (Field Chair), a position which is described below. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence in field-based research and teaching, with evidence of strong mentorship of undergraduate and/or graduate students in field-based settings. The candidate's geoscience field of expertise in research and teaching are unconstrained and may include aspects focused on the pedagogy of teaching in the field or field-based method development. The Field Chair will be a dynamic leader of field experiences in the Department of Geosciences, dedicated to student learning, mentorship, and academic excellence. Further, the Field Chair will coordinate immersive field experiences that are a hallmark of a geosciences education, ensuring they are safe, accessible, well-organized, and impactful. Field experiences are defined here as any university activity that involves traveling to, experiencing, and documenting the natural environments outside of the university's classrooms and laboratories. Experiences in the department currently include two three-week field camps (Summer Geology Field Camp | Geosciences | University of Arkansas) and Spring Break field trips that the Field Chair will be responsible for co-organizing, co-developing, and frequently co-teaching in collaboration with other faculty. The Field Chair will facilitate interdisciplinary faculty and student cooperation across campus and among external university/institutional collaborators. This position will contribute to advancing the strong reputation of the college for academic excellence with a state, national, and international reach. A separate, $1M fundraising campaign is ongoing to support ambitious field experiences for students in the Geosciences at the U of A.
This is an in- person position. Most university classes are offered face-to-face, and extensive in- person engagement in such activities as office hours, student advising, and departmental, college, and university committee meetings is essential to advancing student success and departmental effectiveness. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
About the Department:
The Department of Geosciences at the University of Arkansas maintains a faculty of 24 professorial faculty, research scientists, and instructors, with expertise across many disciplines of the Geosciences. The department runs Bachelor of Science degrees in Geology, Geography, Earth Science and geospatial certificates with about 140 majors. The graduate program has MS Geography and Geology degrees as well as a PhD in Geosciences, with about 70 graduate students in total. The department runs roughly 25 field trips per year, including field camps based around Dillon, MT, and annual Spring Break field courses to various destinations. Strong involvement with the university's Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST), Center for Space and Planetary Studies (SPAC), and Environmental Dynamics Interdisciplinary Graduate Program (ENDY) are ongoing.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Geosciences or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education
Demonstrated record of field-based teaching and research in multiple settings
Experience with teaching multi-week, intensive courses to establish expertise and confidence in field work
Potential to develop and maintain research and teaching programs that require field-based science
Willingness to provide remote support for summer and spring field courses and teach them on a rotating basis (summer pay is additional to 9-month appointment)
Qualifications commensurate with tenure at the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville
Licensure and willingness to drive 12-passenger vans and trucks
Preferred Qualifications:
A record of strong mentorship of undergraduate or graduate students in field-based research projects, as evidenced by theses, papers, reports, or testimonials
A record of high-quality field course development and leadership, as evidenced by course materials, student outcomes, or testimonials
Evidence of strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills that will facilitate working with faculty across the department, university, and beyond
A vision for department field camps and other field activities that leverage departmental strengths
