The King County’s Building Operations Section (BOS) within the Facilities Management Division (FMD) is currently looking to hire a Plumber who wants to be part of a team that prides themselves at providing excellent customer service to our King County customers. This position is part of our Plumbing and Mechanical Shop and will be responsible for performing journey-level Plumber duties such as installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems in and around County facilities.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced journey level plumber.   

  • This position requires the capability to respond to shifting priorities all while accomplishing daily tasks in a safety sensitive work environment. 

  • The person in this role must have strong communication skills to interact, collaborate, and prioritize problems with coworkers, customers, and management in a demanding fast paced environment.

  • This role will require traveling to various locations throughout King County and require a security clearance in order to access the various correctional facilities.

Through a workforce of over 300 dedicated employees, the Facilities Management Division (FMD) operates and manages the County's capital assets by developing and maintaining cost-conscious, sustainable, high-quality facilities, and environments. The Building Operations Section (BOS) provides custodial services, maintenance and building operations as well as building security. In order to be considered for this exciting opportunity, the successful candidate at minimum will demonstrate skill and ability to:

  • Perform preventative, corrective, and emergency plumbing and mechanical maintenance on but not limited to:
    • Irrigation systems.
    • Plumbing fixtures in the shop by re-facing, repacking, and resealing valves; cutting, threading, and bending pipe; replacing pump bushings and washers; and testing pressure equipment.
    • Water mains, sprinklers, fixtures, and other equipment.
    • Experience with snaking and jetting sewers, using cameras, and locating equipment.
    • Plumbing and mechanical systems and system components. 
    • Additional plumbing and mechanical systems as assigned.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and written instructions for plumbing repair and maintenance projects; provide time and material estimates on plumbing repair and maintenance projects.
  • Clean, maintain, and repair power and hand tools used in plumbing assignments.
  • Work in teams and with other work group employees.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the Division's clients, building tenants, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Leverage technology daily to streamline communication and workflow. This includes using cell phones, text messaging, Microsoft Teams IMs, Outlook email, and a work order management system to track and update work orders, coordinate with team members, and document progress. Timekeeping is completed online.
  • Utilize both modern and legacy tools and equipment to efficiently perform plumbing and mechanical tasks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally, in writing, and through technology. Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Candidates must meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Possess a current Washington State PL01 Journey-Level Plumber Certification;
  • Have journey-level steamfitter or pipefitter experience; or
  • Have at least five years of progressively responsible commercial or industrial plumbing service, maintenance, and repair experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
  • Equivalent combinations of relevant education, apprenticeship training, licensing, and experience may also be considered.

MOST COMPETITVE CANDIDATES WILL HAVE: 

  • Experience in preparing cost estimates.
  • Welding or fabricating plates, brackets, and pipes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ongoing learning of Uniform Plumbing Code and other related codes and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
  • Experience building and maintaining positive relationships with multiple stakeholders and crew members; Customer focused.
  • Demonstrated ability and continuous learning to use a computer, smart technology, and various programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, Email, Microsoft Teams, and a work order management system.
  • Washington State Plumber’s License Certification Federal Class 1 and 2 
  • Backflow Testing License
  • City of Seattle Fire Director’s Certificate
  • Certified Welder Card
  • Journey-level Steamfitter (Pipefitter) Card


Additional Position Information:

  • This position has been designated by department leadership as a FIRST RESPONDER in the event of a proclaimed emergency. Meaning this position has a role in emergency response and is responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, environment and/or restoration of order.
  • We are looking to fill positions in both our north location at the King County Courthouse and our south location at the King County Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, WA, covering both day and swing shift.
  • This position must be available for call-out for which appropriate premiums will be paid. Work shifts, and hours may vary due to maintenance and project requirements.
  • We are also creating a hiring list for any future positions that become available in the next 12 months.
  • This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and are therefore overtime eligible.
  • Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek; schedule and work location are to be determined.
  • Incumbents in these positions are represented by the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 32.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon successfully passing a thorough federal and county background investigation, reference checks and clearing a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Applicants will only be permitted to test once every six months.
