The University of Wisconsin-Madison Mead Witter School of Music seeks an artist-teacher and performer of double bass and invites applications for the full-time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Classical Double Bass. The successful candidate will lead a well-established classical double bass program, teach lessons for undergraduates and graduate students, mentor and advise MM and DMA classical double bass students, conduct studio classes, and teach courses in repertoire and pedagogy. Additionally, we expect our new colleague to contribute to the modern transformation and/or new musics priorities in our strategic plan, in the areas of research and teaching.
We anticipate the starting date of this position to be August 23, 2027.
The successful candidate will maintain an active and visible professional profile; build professional relationships with local, regional, and national artistic institutions; actively recruit students for the School’s classical double bass program; cultivate a welcoming and healthy learning environment for students, faculty, and staff; and contribute to service activities in support of the string area, the Mead Witter School of Music, the College of Letters & Science, and the University.

Key Job Responsibilities:
- Recruit and teach a studio of up to 17 undergraduate and graduate students in classical double bass
- Conduct weekly studio classes
- Mentor students and serve on graduate committees
- May teach courses in chamber music, pedagogy and/or other areas of expertise.
- Demonstrate the School’s commitment to recognizing the gifts and needs of all students
- Build relationships across campus and the broader community
- Accomplish and maintain a record of creative scholarship appropriate to a tenure-track position
- Carry out leadership and service, as well as contribute to shared governance, within the string area, the School, the College of Letters & Science, and the University
- As a faculty member in the College of Letters & Science, proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college’s commitment to excellence among all aspects of their teaching, mentoring, research, and service

Required Qualifications:
- Evidence of an emerging or established national/international career in classical double bass, with performances involving a broad range of repertoire
- Evidence of successful teaching and coaching of students at undergraduate and graduate levels and working with a wide variety of repertoire
- Ability to enhance the School’s educational mission and overall commitment to teaching and creative research
- The successful candidate will demonstrate fostering or the ability to foster a teaching, learning, mentoring, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated evidence in mentoring at-risk, first generation, and/or underrepresented undergraduate or graduate students to help them achieve academic success.
