Our Client is a well-established engineering consulting firm seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to join its growing team in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The firm provides innovative engineering solutions to public and private sector clients, with a strong focus on municipal infrastructure and community development.

The Civil Engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning, design, and delivery of municipal infrastructure projects from initial engineering studies and preliminary planning through final design and construction administration.

The successful candidate will have strong experience with municipal infrastructure projects, including water distribution, wastewater and sanitary sewer systems, stormwater drainage, and roadway infrastructure. This position requires strong technical capabilities, project coordination skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, project teams, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

The Civil Engineer will contribute to engineering calculations, design development, construction documentation, permitting, project coordination, construction administration, and technical problem-solving throughout the project lifecycle


Key Responsibilities
Civil Engineering & Infrastructure Design


· Lead and support the design and development of municipal infrastructure projects, including:

· Water distribution systems

· Wastewater and sanitary sewer systems

· Stormwater drainage systems

· Roadway and transportation infrastructure

· Prepare engineering studies, preliminary designs, final designs, construction plans, technical specifications, and permitting documents.

· Develop engineering calculations, layouts, plans, details, and technical documentation in accordance with applicable engineering standards.

· Review project requirements and develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.

· Ensure engineering designs and project deliverables meet applicable local, state, and federal requirements.

· Identify technical challenges and provide appropriate engineering recommendations.

Project Coordination & Management

· Coordinate project activities with project managers, engineers, surveyors, designers, technicians, contractors, municipal representatives, and other stakeholders.

· Assist with project planning, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, scope management, and work planning.

· Monitor project progress and assist in ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and within budget.

· Maintain accurate project records, engineering documentation, schedules, and project files throughout the project lifecycle.

· Manage multiple project assignments and priorities while maintaining quality and meeting established deadlines.

Construction Administration & Support

· Provide engineering and technical support during construction activities.

· Participate in construction administration and project coordination activities.

· Review shop drawings, material submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), pay applications, change orders, and other construction documentation.

· Assist with resolving construction-related technical issues and field conditions.

· Coordinate with contractors and project stakeholders to support successful project execution.

· Monitor construction progress and communicate project-related issues to appropriate project personnel.

Client & Regulatory Coordination

· Support communication with municipal clients and participate in project meetings, presentations, and discussions.

· Coordinate with municipal agencies, regulatory authorities, permitting agencies, and funding organizations.

· Assist with obtaining and maintaining required project permits and approvals.

· Communicate project requirements, engineering recommendations, and technical findings clearly to clients and project stakeholders.

· Ensure project activities and deliverables comply with applicable regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and client expectations.

Required Skills & Experience

· Minimum of 5 years of professional civil engineering experience.

· Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

· Strong experience designing and delivering municipal infrastructure projects.

· Hands-on experience with one or more of the following:

· Water distribution systems

· Wastewater and sanitary sewer systems

· Stormwater drainage systems

· Roadway and transportation infrastructure

· Experience with construction administration and project documentation.

· Knowledge of municipal permitting requirements, engineering standards, and regulatory processes.

· Experience supporting project budgets, schedules, scopes, resource planning, and work plans.

· Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office.

· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

· Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality engineering deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications

· Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward obtaining PE licensure.

· Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects from concept through construction.

· Experience working directly with municipal clients and government agencies.

· Familiarity with municipal funding programs and infrastructure improvement initiatives.

· Strong project management and client relationship management skills.

· Experience coordinating multiple engineering projects and competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

· Knowledge of applicable municipal, state, and federal engineering standards and regulations.

Work Environment

This is an on-site engineering position based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The role involves working in a professional consulting environment with regular collaboration among engineers, project managers, surveyors, designers, technicians, contractors, municipal representatives, and other project stakeholders.

The position may include a combination of office-based engineering and project-related field activities, including construction administration, site observations, project meetings, and coordination with contractors and municipal agencies.

The successful candidate must be able to manage multiple assignments, meet project deadlines, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, and maintain a high standard of technical accuracy and professionalism.

Compensation & Opportunity
