Description
The City of Brevard Police Department is seeking Part-Time Police Officers to help cover patrol shifts and assist with special events. This is an as-needed position with hours scheduled based on departmental need and officer availability.
Position Summary
This position performs a full range of general law enforcement duties designed to partner with the public to prevent and detect crime, address traffic safety issues, and respond to the needs of citizens. Work includes patrolling the City during an assigned rotating shift in a police car or on foot; preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime; performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; and executing related assignments.
- Patrols streets by police car or on foot; checks doors and windows; examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detects unusual conditions and may maintain surveillance for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects; reports dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions
- Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, and loud or disruptive behavior; determines the true nature of a situation and takes appropriate legal or persuasive action
- Investigates traffic accidents; issues traffic citations; directs traffic and participates in other emergency operations; provides preliminary medical assistance until advanced rescue crews arrive; assists with loading and transport
- Performs initial investigations of accidents or possible crimes through observation, witness questioning, and evidence gathering; performs investigative tasks, arrests, and processing of criminal suspects
- Testifies in court in traffic cases and other investigations
- Apprehends and processes criminal suspects and transports them to detention facilities
- Operates a two-way radio to receive and report information to and from police headquarters
- Prepares records and reports of activities
- Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; serves papers as needed
- Maintains vehicle, weapons, and other equipment in proper working order
- Gives information and directions to visitors and the general public
- Assists with emergency response activities such as evacuations and cleanup
- Performs related duties as required
Possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate and ablility to become certified as a law enforcement officer through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission
Special Requirements: Before assignment to sworn duties, employees must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and have completed at least the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.
Applicants extended a conditional offer of employment for this position will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation, drug screening, fingerprint-based background check, and other requirements set forth by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Employment is contingent upon satisfactorily meeting these requirements.
- Considerable knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the police department, especially relating to search and seizure, traffic control, pursuit, and arrest.
- Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment.
- Some knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics.
- Ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
- Ability to present effective court testimony.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise activity reports.
- Ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective public relations with the citizens.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and other public officials.
