We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Traffic Technician, working with the Public Works Department. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the maintenance operation of the traffic signals and streetlights.  

Under basic supervision, this job classification performs skilled electrical work in the design, construction, operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, streetlights, public works electrical equipment, communications equipment, and signing and striping. Positions require employees to perform standby and emergency call duty.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Installs and repairs traffic signal hardware, cables, antennas, controllers, cabinets and roadway lighting.
  • Inspects and maintains traffic signal hardware, new construction sites, roadway lighting, and vehicle detection installations.
  • Assists in the installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of miscellaneous electrical equipment and/or public works projects with other City departments.
  • Fabricates hardware for traffic signals and signs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and inspection of traffic signal hardware and public works electrical equipment.
  • Programs traffic signal controllers, and malfunction management units.
  • Assists with the blue stake marking and set up of traffic control zones at construction sites to minimize risk of accidents and enhance safety of work crews.
  • Manages inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Responds to questions from residents and provides information and customer service.
  • Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments; promotes a culture of safety.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years' experience in electronic and electrical components; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Electrical Public Works experience preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Methods, procedures, materials, equipment and tools used for installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control signals and related devices.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) standards, protocols, specifications and guidelines.
  • OSHA safety rules and regulations, and safety standards in hazardous traffic environments.
  • Basics of Internet Protocol (IP) and National Electrical Code.
  • Traffic laws and rules, and techniques of traffic control.
  • City geography, traffic patterns, and the location of streets, landmarks and buildings.

Skill in:
  • Operating equipment used in the installation, testing and maintenance of public works electrical systems.
  • Operating specialized equipment used in the fabrication of traffic signs.
  • Reading and understanding plans, specifications and schematics.
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of trucks and equipment according to basic procedures.
  • Following safe work practices.
  • Maintaining records and files.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required. A valid Arizona State Class A Commercial Driver’s License and an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal and Roadway Lighting Technician certification are required within twelve (12) months of hire; additional technical training and certifications may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment and at job sites throughout the City. May be required to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment. Physical dexterity is required to work in confined spaces and use precision tools and equipment; requires vision capacity to perform fine calibrations and distinguish between colored wires.
