Company Description
We’re representing a fast-growing technology company building a startup discovery and intelligence platform used by leading investors, technology companies, corporate development teams, and GTM organizations.
The platform maps the startup ecosystem across tens of millions of companies, hundreds of millions of people, and hundreds of attributes per entity, giving customers the data and workflows they need to discover promising companies, conduct research, manage opportunities, and turn those discoveries into action.
The company is growing revenue at 100%+ annually, has raised approximately $30M, and is already trusted by some of the most sophisticated organizations across AI, venture capital, and technology. The business is financially stable with a long runway while remaining early enough for new engineers to have significant influence over the product and technical direction.
What You Will Do
- Own customer-facing product features end-to-end, from the underlying data and backend systems through the frontend experience.
- Build scalable, performant, and observable systems on top of extremely large datasets.
- Design backend services and data-intensive applications that remain performant as both data volume and product usage grow.
- Build and evolve APIs, including GraphQL APIs backed by large data sources.
- Work across a modern stack that includes Python, Go, GraphQL, React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, GCP, Terraform, dbt, LangChain, and LangGraph.
- Build asynchronous backend systems and data pipelines supporting data-heavy product experiences.
- Work on problems involving search, recommendations, ranking systems, knowledge graphs, data infrastructure, and AI-powered workflows.
- Ship quickly, measure how customers interact with what you build, and iterate based on real usage.
- Work closely with Product, Design, and GTM while maintaining a strong customer-first perspective.
- Understand the problem being solved and the user being served rather than treating engineering as an isolated implementation function.
- Improve performance and reliability across both backend services and customer-facing experiences.
- Use AI as an engineering and product tool while maintaining strong underlying technical judgment.
Ideal Background
- 5–8 years of full-stack software engineering experience building sophisticated web applications.
- Strong full-stack range with a meaningful backend lean — approximately 70% backend / 30% frontend.
- Deep backend engineering experience beyond dashboards, monitoring, or lightweight application development.
- Strong experience with Python and modern frontend technologies such as React.
- Experience with GraphQL, ideally designing and implementing GraphQL APIs on top of large datasets.
- Experience with Go is particularly valuable.
- Demonstrated experience building web applications that manage or surface large amounts of data, such as CRM-like products, knowledge systems, collaborative databases, or similar data-intensive applications.
- Experience building scalable backend services and asynchronous data pipelines.
- Clear progression within high-growth, well-funded startup environments.
- Ideally brings a combination of startup ownership and experience working within more mature engineering environments.
- Strong product and customer orientation; able to clearly articulate what problem they were solving, who the user was, and why their technical decisions mattered.
- Strong system design, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
- High energy and strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Technical or computer science degree from a strong academic program.
- Track record of meaningful tenure and ownership rather than repeated short-term or contract engagements.
Preferred
- Experience designing GraphQL APIs over large or complex datasets.
- Strong production experience with Go.
- Experience with search, ranking, recommendation systems, or knowledge graphs.
- Experience building products similar to Notion, Airtable, CRM platforms, or other highly interactive data-heavy applications.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch.
- Experience with large-scale data pipelines and asynchronous processing.
- Familiarity with GCP, Terraform, and modern data infrastructure.
- Experience building AI-powered product workflows using technologies such as LangChain or LangGraph.
- Founding engineer, early engineering employee, or startup founder experience.
- Strong customer-facing instincts and experience working directly with Product, Design, or GTM teams.
- Interest in startups, company discovery, venture capital, or the broader technology ecosystem.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary: $180,000–$220,000.
- Competitive equity.
- Full-time role based in New York City.
- Hybrid schedule with 3 days per week in the Flatiron office.
- Candidates should be able to work onsite or be willing to relocate to New York.
- Simple visa transfers, including H-1B transfers and TN visas, can be supported.
- Current hiring target is 1 engineer.
- The role can sit across one of several product areas focused on startup discovery, deal management, or ecosystem integrations.
- Interview process includes:
- 20–30 minute recruiter introduction
- 45-minute technical debugging interview
- 45-minute system design interview
- 2–3 hour final onsite collaborative engineering session
- Final leadership confirmation
- Best suited for a product-minded full-stack engineer with substantial backend depth who wants to work on data-intensive systems while remaining close to customers and the end-user product.
