Job Description:
Your Impact
As a Senior Safety Engineer at Leonardo, you'll be at the forefront of developing the next generation of Electronic Warfare capabilities that help military personnel operate safely and effectively in some of the world's most challenging environments.
This isn't just another safety role. You'll work on highly complex, mission-critical systems where your expertise will directly influence system design, operational effectiveness, and ultimately the safety of those relying on our technology.
Working within our growing Electronic Warfare project team you'll play a key role in embedding safety throughout the engineering lifecycle, from early concept and design through to deployment and in-service support. You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, military users, and Ministry of Defence stakeholders to ensure our solutions meet the highest standards of safety, compliance, and performance.
If you're motivated by solving complex engineering challenges, influencing system design, and making a tangible impact on national security, we'd love to hear from you.
This Role Could Be Ideal If You...
- Enjoy understanding how complex systems interact and can quickly identify critical dependencies and risks
- Have experience applying safety engineering principles within aerospace, defence, military aviation, or other safety-critical industries
- Thrive when working alongside multidisciplinary teams to solve challenging technical problems
- Want to influence system design from the outset rather than assessing safety retrospectively
- Are confident leading safety programmes, driving best practice, and championing a strong safety culture
What You'll Be Doing
As a Senior System Safety Engineer, you'll take ownership of safety activities across complex Electronic Warfare programmes, including:
- Leading the delivery of safety assessments and ensuring activities are conducted in line with Safety Management Plans
- Identifying, analysing, and assessing system hazards, developing effective mitigation strategies to reduce risks to ALARP levels
- Performing intrinsic and functional hazard analyses across complex integrated systems
- Defining and managing safety requirements throughout the engineering lifecycle
- Reviewing subsystem safety evidence and integrating findings into system-level assessments
- Producing and maintaining key safety artefacts and certification evidence
- Influencing engineering decisions and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure safety is considered from concept through to capability delivery
What You'll Bring
- Proven experience conducting system safety analysis within a safety-critical industry
- Experience working across multiple stages of the engineering lifecycle
- Ability to lead safety work packages and coordinate activities across diverse engineering teams
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels
- Experience engaging with customers, suppliers, and regulatory authorities
- A genuine passion for promoting a positive safety culture and driving continuous improvement
Experience with one or more of the following standards or frameworks would be advantageous:
- Def Stan 00-056
- Def Stan 00-055
- ARP4754B
- ARP4761A
- RTCA DO-254
- RTCA DO-178C
This is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above. The most important skill is a good attitude and willingness to learn.
