The City of Pasadena Public Health Department is currently seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Community Services Representative I to serve Child Watch role to support the Black Infant Health (BIH) program. BIH helps pregnant and parenting women develop life skills, set and attain health goals, and learn strategies for managing stress. The focus is to address the large and persistent disparities in maternal and infant health that affect the African American birthing community and align with the Pasadena Public Health Department goal of ending health inequities and achieving healthy birth outcomes for Black women. Service delivery is achieved through providing 10 prenatal and 10 postpartum groups sessions covering a number of varying topics. The program also provides client-centered life planning and one-on-one case management.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have a background in Early Childhood Education or Child Development and possess experience working with children. Have knowledge of age-appropriate activities for children, able to plan and oversee child-space schedules, model and encourage good social skills, e.g., strong communication and conflict-resolution skills. Ensure a safe, sanitary, and orderly environment and maintain professional and positive relationships with parents, children, and staff. Additional experience in outreaching and recruiting is a plus.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

For over 130 years, the Pasadena Public Health Department has been responsible for helping protect, maintain, and improve the health of the Pasadena community. The City of Pasadena is one of only three cities in the State of California that maintains its own independent local health jurisdiction with responsibility for a wide variety of services that support the three core functions of assessment, policy development, and assurance.  This is a limited-term, grant-funded position with funding through June 30, 2027.   • Caring for infants and children during BIH in-person group sessions
  • Establish a positive, safe, and nurturing environment for babies and children to learn and thrive
  • Create fun and enriching age-appropriate activities where children can enhance their developmental skills including language, fine and gross-motor development, cognitive development, social and emotional development, and self-esteem.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and will establish positive relationships with parents, children, and program staff.
  • Assist BIH Community Outreach Liaison (COL) with outreach and recruitment activities
  • Assist with distributing outreach materials such as program fliers and setting up for outreach presentations as needed

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • One year of community service experience providing information/making presentations to the target population and performing tasks related to the program.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Due to the terms of the grant that funds this position, a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university program in Women/Maternal Health, Child/Infant Health, Social Work, Health Education, Human Services, or a related field is preferred and will be factored into the initial screening.
  • Three years of community service experience providing direct services to the target population is preferred.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation, panel interview, and department-level interviews.

VACANCY INFORMATION

There is currently one part-time, limited-term/grant-funded vacancy in the Community Health Services division of the Public Health Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future. Candidates selected for this position will serve a one-year probationary work period.

Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.

Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends.
