Assistant Vice President, Environmental Casualty Claims Manager

Position Overview

Our insurance carrier client is seeking an experienced Assistant Vice President, Environmental Casualty Claims Manager to lead a specialized team responsible for managing complex Environmental Casualty claims and providing strategic oversight of the organization's environmental claims portfolio.

This is a senior claims leadership position responsible for establishing claims strategy, driving technical excellence, overseeing complex and high-severity claims, managing litigation and coverage issues, and developing a high-performing claims team. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience handling environmental liability and casualty claims, strong technical judgment, and demonstrated success leading claims professionals within a carrier environment.

The AVP will partner closely with Underwriting, Legal, Risk Management, Actuarial, and senior Claims leadership to ensure disciplined claim resolution, appropriate reserving, effective litigation management, and consistent execution of the company's claims philosophy.

 

Salary

• $180,000 to $220,000+/year (based on experience)

Job Description

• Provide strategic and technical leadership for the Environmental Casualty Claims function and overall environmental claims portfolio.
• Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a team of claims professionals, promoting technical excellence, accountability, and consistent claims practices.
• Oversee the handling of complex, high-severity, and high-exposure environmental casualty claims from initial assignment through resolution.
• Establish and maintain appropriate claims strategies for complex environmental exposures, including coverage, liability, damages, litigation, and settlement considerations.
• Provide senior-level oversight of claim reserves, including reserve adequacy, development, large-loss activity, and reserve recommendations.
• Review and provide direction on complex coverage issues, liability disputes, litigation strategies, and settlement negotiations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or professional designation is a plus.
• 10+ years of progressive claims experience, with significant experience handling complex Environmental Casualty claims.
• Demonstrated experience within a property & casualty insurance carrier, preferably in a leadership or management capacity.
• Strong technical knowledge of environmental liability, casualty claims, coverage analysis, litigation, liability assessment, and complex claim resolution.
• Experience managing significant claim exposures and large-loss portfolios.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and mentor claims professionals.
• Strong understanding of claims reserving, claim audits, litigation management, and vendor oversight.
