Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

Position Summary:

Join athenahealth’s Corporate Accounting team as a Senior Accounting Associate supporting month-end close, financial reporting, audit, tax, and process improvement work. In this role, you will partner closely with Finance, FP&A, and Tax to help ensure accurate reporting, strong controls, and efficient accounting operations. This position is based at athenahealth and reports to an Accounting Manager or Senior Manager of Accounting.

About the Team:

The Corporate Accounting team supports the company’s financial close, reporting, and control environment while partnering with Finance, FP&A, Tax, and audit teams. The team focuses on accurate monthly close activities, financial statement support, internal controls, and continuous improvement across accounting processes. Team members also help evaluate system changes and automation opportunities that improve efficiency and reporting quality. The work requires close coordination across the finance organization and with internal and external auditors.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Support month-end close activities, including reviewing contracts and preparing journal entries and related calculations.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations and support account analysis.
  • Draft written explanations for month-over-month fluctuations in balance sheet and P&L reviews.
  • Assist in preparing month-end reporting packages for senior leadership.
  • Respond to questions about financial statement and operational finance performance from finance and business partners.
  • Maintain internal controls over financial accounting and reporting processes in compliance with SOX and help identify control improvements when needed.
  • Assist with external reporting support, including footnotes and disclosures.
  • Support internal and external audit requests and related documentation.
  • Use available AI tools to help organize reconciliations, summarize variance explanations, and streamline reporting work while checking outputs carefully for accuracy and accounting compliance.
  • Assist with systems implementation, testing, and rollout of new Oracle general ledger features and other process improvement initiatives.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Help identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, efficiency, and automation.
  • Support special projects as needed across the finance organization.
  • Work collaboratively with FP&A, Tax, and other finance partners on cross-functional tasks.
  • Contribute to documentation and maintenance of accounting procedures and controls.
  • Support issue resolution and follow-up related to close, reporting, or audit activities.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and assist with additional responsibilities as business needs evolve.
  • Maintain a professional, team-oriented approach in a fast-paced environment.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • Public accounting experience or equivalent industry experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP required.
  • Strong understanding of risks, controls, and SOX compliance required.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to explain issues clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Strong Excel skills required.
  • Experience supporting month-end close, financial reporting, or audit activities preferred.
  • Experience with Oracle general ledger or similar ERP systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated integrity and sound judgment in handling financial information.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a fast-paced, growing environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, solve problems, and maintain a positive, professional approach.

Expected Compensation

$77,000 - $131,000

About athenahealth

Our vision: In an industry that becomes more complex by the day, we stand for simplicity. We offer IT solutions and expert services that eliminate the daily hurdles preventing healthcare providers from focusing entirely on their patients — powered by our vision to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

Our company culture: Our talented  employees — or athenistas, as we call ourselves — spark the innovation and passion needed to accomplish our vision. We are a diverse group of dreamers and do-ers with unique knowledge, expertise, backgrounds, and perspectives. We unite as mission-driven problem-solvers with a deep desire to achieve our vision and make our time here count. Our award-winning culture is built around shared values of inclusiveness, accountability, and support.

Our DEI commitment: Our vision of accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all requires addressing the inequities that stand in the way. That's one reason we prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our business, from attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce to maintaining an inclusive environment for athenistas, our partners, customers and the communities where we work and serve.

What we can do for you:

Along with health and financial benefits, athenistas enjoy perks specific to each location, including commuter support, employee assistance programs, tuition assistance, employee resource groups, and collaborative  workspaces  — some offices even welcome dogs.

We also encourage a better work-life balance for athenistas with our flexibility. While we know in-office collaboration is critical to our vision, we recognize that not all work needs to be done within an office environment, full-time. With consistent communication and digital collaboration tools, athenahealth enables employees to find a balance that feels fulfilling and productive for each individual situation.

In addition to our traditional benefits and perks, we sponsor events throughout the year, including book clubs, external speakers, and hackathons.
