Why does this job exist and why is it critical?
Legal support on a wide range of telecommunications-related matters, including regulatory compliance, corporate and commercial contracts and dispute resolution. The Legal Counsel will play a critical role in supporting business operations, mitigating legal risks, and advising on compliance with applicable laws and industry regulations.
What You Will Do
- Contract Drafting and Negotiation
- Draft, review, and negotiate a comprehensive range of commercial, network, and technology contracts, including network sharing, MVNO service contracts, access agreements, bandwidth leasing, interconnection, roaming, tower sharing, technology contracts (SaaS, cloud services, software licensing, managed services), supply chain contracts, reseller and distributorship agreements, partnership arrangements, and enterprise solutions contracts.
- Ensure contracts reflect the company’s commercial objectives and mitigate legal and regulatory risks.
- Advisory
- Provide legal advice on telecommunications regulations, licensing requirements, data protection, consumer protection, and competition law.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting the telecommunications sector and advise management on compliance, implications and recommended way forward.
- Dispute Resolution and Litigation Management
- Manage and coordinate legal disputes, claims, litigation involving the company, working closely with external counsel as necessary.
- Advise on dispute avoidance strategies and settlement negotiations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with business units including commercial, technical, finance, and regulatory teams to provide legal support on projects and transactions.
- Conduct legal training and awareness sessions for employees on relevant legal topics.
What you need to have for this role:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognised university.
- Minimum of ten (10) years’ post-qualification experience, preferably within the telecommunications or technology sector.
- Called to the Malaysian Bar (or equivalent recognized jurisdiction).
- CeIO, CIPP/A and relevant certifications will be highly preferred
Skills & Knowledge:
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and drafting skills.
- Strong commercial acumen and ability to align legal advice with business objectives.
- Good understanding of regulatory frameworks governing telecommunications, consumer and related industries.
- Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Proficient in English and Bahasa Malaysia (written and spoken).
- Familiarity with technology and intellectual property law.
