Contract Service Designer – NHS / Central Government Experience is Essential
Rate: £TBC but is Inside IR35
Location: Primarily remote with occasional need in London
Duration: Until January (initially)
Role Overview
We’re looking for an experienced Service Designer to support the design and transformation of critical NHS services. You’ll work closely with users, stakeholders, and multi-disciplinary teams to map end-to-end service journeys, identify pain points, and design solutions that are both user-centred and operationally viable.
This role requires someone who can balance strategic service design thinking with hands-on delivery — shaping the vision of services while ensuring designs are practical, inclusive, and deliverable in complex healthcare and government environments.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead the design of end-to-end NHS services, ensuring they meet user needs and organisational goals
-
Map complex service ecosystems, identifying opportunities to improve user journeys and remove friction points
-
Co-create solutions with users, frontline staff, and stakeholders, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility
-
Translate research insights into actionable service blueprints, prototypes, and design artefacts
-
Collaborate with product managers, policy leads, business analysts, and technical teams to ensure services are feasible and sustainable
-
Champion a user-centred design culture across programmes, advocating for evidence-based decisions
-
Communicate service concepts and designs effectively to both senior stakeholders and delivery teams
-
Support continuous improvement by measuring and iterating on live services
Required Experience
-
5+ years in service design roles, with experience delivering within NHS, central government, or similarly complex public sector environments
-
Proven track record in designing and improving end-to-end services in large organisations
-
Strong expertise in service mapping, blueprinting, journey mapping, and prototyping
-
Deep understanding of user-centred design principles and inclusive design practices
-
Experience working with multi-disciplinary agile teams (product, policy, research, engineering, operations)
-
Familiarity with service design and research tools (e.g. Miro, Figma, Lucid, Adobe XD)
-
Strong communication and facilitation skills — able to bring diverse stakeholder groups together
-
Knowledge of public sector service standards (e.g. Government Digital Service (GDS) Service Standard)
-
Experience applying design to highly regulated environments, balancing user needs with compliance and operational requirements
-
Comfortable with agile delivery practices and tools (e.g. Jira, Confluence)
