Description: What you'll be doing

Another Source's client, OHSU Foundation, is recruiting a Managing Director of Finance to join their team in Portland, Oregon.

Here's a little about OHSU Foundation:

OHSU Foundation exists to advance the mission of Oregon Health & Science University by connecting the generosity of donors with opportunities to transform health, education, and discovery. Its financial enterprise reflects both the scale and complexity of that mission: the Foundation oversees financial activity and reporting for more than $2 billion in invested assets, including more than 1,000 endowments, 40 trusts, and 150 annuities

Working at the intersection of philanthropy, healthcare, higher education, and finance, the Foundation partners closely with OHSU leaders, faculty, donors, trustees, and external advisors to ensure philanthropic resources are managed responsibly and positioned for long-term impact.

About this role:

The Managing Director of Finance is a senior financial leadership opportunity with broad influence across OHSU Foundation. Reporting to the CFO – VP of Finance & Administration, this leader will help shape and implement financial strategy while overseeing critical areas including financial reporting, fund and endowment accounting, trust administration, internal controls, audit, and financial policy.

Just as importantly, this is a highly collaborative role. You will serve as a strategic advisor to Foundation leadership, the Board of Trustees and its committees, and OHSU finance and faculty partners—translating complex financial information into insights that support decision-making, donor stewardship, and the effective use of philanthropic funds.

Scope & Impact

  • Financial Reporting, Ledgers & Donor Fund Accounts – 40%: Lead financial reporting and accounting activities while ensuring compliance with appropriate GASB and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop meaningful financial and operational information that gives Foundation leadership actionable insights and supports sound decision-making.
  • Lead monthly and annual close processes and coordinate financial consolidation activities with OHSU.
  • Co-lead the annual audit, partnering with the external audit team and OHSU financial partners to establish timelines, resolve issues, and successfully complete the process.
  • Design, implement, and monitor internal controls over financial reporting while protecting the integrity of the Foundation's financial reporting systems.
  • Evaluate and evolve accounting and reporting practices as contributions, funds under management, regulatory requirements, and gift complexity continue to grow.
  • Partner with key OHSU faculty and finance leaders to provide strategic financial guidance and support the effective use of Foundation gift funds.
  • Trust Administration & Endowment Accounting – 30%: Develop and implement approaches to assess and manage risk associated with charitable gift annuity agreements and provide regular updates to the Investment Committee.
  • Collaborate with gift planning colleagues to optimize trust and annuity administration.
  • Donor Strategy & Stewardship – 20%: Partner with Foundation and OHSU stakeholders to inform strategies for top donor relationships and strengthen financial stewardship.
  • Develop sophisticated financial reporting and analysis to turn complex data into useful insights for strategic partners.
  • Leadership, Management & Department Operations – 10%: Lead, coach, mentor, and evaluate Finance and Accounting staff while building the team's capabilities and ensuring critical responsibilities are effectively cross-trained.
  • Develop and maintain accounting and finance policies and procedures and serve as a trusted resource on complex financial matters.
  • Evaluate unusual assets and complex gift scenarios and provide thoughtful financial recommendations.
  • Help translate Board-approved financial and investment policy into effective operating practices across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of broad experience across investment, tax, and general accounting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in generally accepted accounting principles, nonprofit accounting, investment and endowment accounting, tax reporting, and financial reporting systems.
  • Strong understanding of investment concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience managing and assessing financial and business risk and developing appropriate recommendations.
  • Exceptional analytical skills, including the ability to locate, model, interpret, and communicate complex financial information from multiple sources.
  • Advanced capability with financial reporting, large data sets, accounting systems, Microsoft Office, and database applications.
  • Proven leadership experience, including successfully managing, mentoring, developing, retaining, and recruiting professional staff.
  • Ability to effectively advise and collaborate with senior leadership, staff, trustees, faculty partners, and external constituents.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills with the ability to make complex financial concepts accessible to varied audiences.
  • Demonstrated accountability, sound judgment, and ownership of programs, projects, and outcomes.
  • CPA certification preferred.

What's in it for you:

The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $126,000–$168,000

OHSU Foundation is open to a flexible hybrid work arrangement based on the needs of the role and team.

Beyond compensation, this role offers the opportunity to lead finance at significant scale and complexity while supporting a philanthropic organization closely connected to OHSU's work in healthcare, research, and education. You will have visibility with executive leadership and the Board, the opportunity to influence financial strategy, and responsibility for an investment and philanthropic asset portfolio exceeding $2 billion.

The position may occasionally require hours outside the normal workday for meetings or programs, travel within the Portland metro area to OHSU sites and other local facilities, and occasional travel outside the region for conferences, training, and due diligence.
