Service - Teamwork - Operational Readiness - Professionalism

The Marin County Fire Department is seeking a skilled and adaptable Media Technician to support its various divisions in promoting clear, timely, and effective communication with both internal and external audiences. This position plays a vital role in supporting the department’s public image and enhancing community engagement through strategic media relations, social media management, and public information campaigns. 

The Media Technician will report to the Media Manager. Key responsibilities include supporting the creation of content for public announcements, emergency updates, social media, and educational materials, while working closely with the Media team. Given the County’s commitment to inclusive and effective communication, English/Spanish bilingual skills are required.

Candidates must be willing to work on-site, as in-person presence is essential to effectively support the dynamic needs of the Marin County Fire Department. This position also requires flexibility, with occasional evening and weekend hours based on the outreach and emergency needs. 

There is currently one (1) temporary (37.5 hours per week) Media Technician position within the Fire Department. 


Our Highly Qualified Candidate: 

The ideal applicant possesses a combination of the following experience and competencies:

  • Prepares and posts basic web-site, blog and social media updates.
  • Edits and proofreads organizational communications and documents.
  • Maintains custom databases as appropriate. Prepares queries and reports as needed.
  • Develops and produces media-related forms using appropriate software.
  • Provides outreach assistance for events as needed, including coordinating logistics with facility staff, set-up and take down, and participant registration; backs-up staff as needed.
  • Assists with media-related procurement: contacts vendors, conducts research, places orders, delivers materials, works with Purchasing as needed.
  • Organizes and maintains media and outreach supplies. Notifies appropriate staff about supply and promotional purchasing needs and ensures outreach materials are current and stocked.
  • Government protocols for public information and emergency communications.
  • Working in the Fire, Police, and/or Emergency Management industry.   


QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: 

  • Principles and practices of office administration related to media activity.
  • Principles and practices of preparing, maintaining and auditing a wide variety of forms, reports and documentation related to media activity for completeness, accuracy and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Practices for gathering, compiling and summarizing information from a variety of sources and preparing written reports and documentation.
  • Techniques and methods used in composing and preparing correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, reports, and similar materials.
  • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to work.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.

Ability to:

  • Perform technical, specialized and/or complex media-related office administrative support work for an organization.
  • Prepare accurate, effective, and timely media materials, reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Use software or systems related to assignment, such as graphic or web design software.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

College coursework or training specifically related to media, communications, marketing, public relations or closely related activities and one (1) year of journey-level or above administrative support experience. One (1) year of experience in media support activities may substitute for the required education.

Bilingual Testing / Certification: Bilingual assignments require a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and in the assigned language. If our records do not indicate that you have previously passed a bilingual proficiency exam with the County of Marin, a bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure that you possess the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements of the position.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
