Description
Bring your expertise to a team that handles the most complex work in the industry.
We're hiring a Senior Technical Claims Specialist to join a team dedicated to Construction Defect claims — one of the most intellectually demanding and highly regarded specialties in commercial casualty. This is a role for an experienced claims professional who wants real ownership: you'll drive coverage, liability, litigation strategy, and resolution on sophisticated commercial casualty matters from start to finish, with the autonomy that comes from being recognized as a subject matter expert.
You'll work across primary, umbrella, and excess claims — directly and as a Third-Party Administrator (TPA) — including Wrap-Up/Controlled Insurance Programs (CIP, OCIP, CCIP) and a full spectrum of retention structures, from zero-dollar deductibles to large self-insured retentions, fully fronted programs, and Captives. If you want variety and complexity in your caseload, this is it.
Why you'll want this role
- Real technical ownership. You'll determine coverage, investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and resolve — not just process. Your judgment drives outcomes.
- Recognition as an expert. This role is built for someone who already operates at a senior level and wants to be treated — and consulted — as one, including mentoring newer talent and advising Claims Management on emerging trends and legislation.
- Meaningful variety. Construction Defect work spans owners, developers, construction managers, general contractors, and subcontractors across every trade — no two files look alike.
- A seat at the table. You'll partner directly with Underwriting, Reinsurance, Defense Counsel, Coverage Counsel, and Home Office Legal, shaping strategy on high-stakes matters.
- Flexibility with structure. This role is primarily remote, with a light-touch office cadence — just two in-office days per month for those within 50 miles of one of our hub locations (Boston, MA; Hoffman Estates, IL; Indianapolis, IN; Lake Oswego, OR; Las Vegas, NV; Plano, TX; Suwanee, GA; Chandler, AZ; and Weatogue, CT). Policy subject to change.
What you'll do
- Determine coverage — including additional insured and contractual tender analysis (in and out) — and draft clear, well-reasoned coverage position letters.
- Investigate complex commercial casualty claims, determine liability, and set/adjust reserves (loss and ALAE) proactively and responsively.
- Evaluate claims, negotiate settlements, and authorize payment or denial — including coverage denials and coverage litigation management when warranted.
- Review lawsuits, construction contracts, and Certificates of Insurance; build resolution strategies for claims, coverage disputes, and litigation.
- Analyze allocation, co-carrier contributions, time-on-risk, and covered vs. non-covered damages.
- Manage tenders across multiple parties — Owners, Developers, Construction Managers, General Contractors, and Subcontractors.
- Maintain clear, well-organized file documentation and data capture to support trend analysis and reporting, including Large Loss Reports.
- Build and lead the right resolution team for each matter — Defense Counsel, Home Office Legal/Litigation, and Outside Coverage Counsel as needed — and oversee outside counsel practices and billing.
- Serve as a trusted point of contact for Policyholders, Brokers, Co-Carriers, Excess and Fronting Carriers, and internal partners across Underwriting, Client Services, and Billing.
- Mentor and train other claims professionals, and stay ahead of legislative, judicial, and industry trends that affect specialty coverage.
- Contribute to special projects that shape how the team operates.
What we're looking for
An experienced claims professional with a strong Commercial Casualty and/or Construction defect background, sound judgment on complex coverage and liability questions, and the confidence to lead files, mentor others, and manage litigation strategy independently.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 to 7 years claims adjusting experience.
- Advanced knowledge of Commercial Casualty and/or Construction Defect claims investigation, coverage evaluation, reserving & expense management, resolution strategy, negotiation, litigation management, claims evaluation as well as the insurance legal and regulatory environment.
- Intermediate to advanced level of skill in the area of customer focus, problem solving, communications, gaining support, teamwork, and adaptability and demonstrated ability to work independently, achieve results and execute thoroughly
