Discipline Head - Applied Business, Management & Enterprise​

 
What’s the job? 
The Discipline Head is a senior academic leadership role within the School, providing strategic, academic, operational and people leadership across a defined discipline area. You will shape the discipline’s direction and reputation, ensuring it remains academically strong, industry-relevant, research-informed, professionally connected and aligned with University priorities. 

Working closely with the Dean of School, Associate Deans, Course Coordinators, academic staff and external partners, you will drive high-quality teaching, student outcomes, scholarship and research, workforce relevance and operational performance. You will also maintain an active teaching contribution and engage in scholarship, research and professional practice appropriate to your academic classification. 
 
Principle accountabilities: 

• Provide strategic direction for the discipline, including planning, portfolio development, academic workforce planning and its academic identity and reputation. 

• Lead discipline-level curriculum design, review, renewal, quality assurance and accreditation, ensuring alignment with TEQSA, AQF and HESF requirements. 

• Lead, manage, mentor and develop academic staff and Course Coordinators, including performance, workload planning and capability development. 

• Drive a student-centred culture focused on success, retention, progression, employability and graduate outcomes, using data and feedback to guide improvement. 

• Build strong relationships with industry, employers, professional bodies, alumni and community partners to strengthen curriculum relevance, student experience and graduate outcomes. 

• Foster scholarship, research and professional practice across the discipline and support staff to grow their scholarly contribution. 

• Contribute to School governance, academic risk management, regulatory compliance and operational performance.

You are an experienced academic leader who can set strategic direction while staying connected to teaching, people and student outcomes. You bring strong judgement, an inclusive and collaborative leadership style, and the ability to influence across academic, professional, industry and governance environments. You are comfortable leading through change, using evidence to make decisions and building a high-performance, student-centred academic culture. 

To be successful in this position you will have:  

• A doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent academic and/or professional standing and academic leadership experience. A master’s qualification with significant industry or academic leadership experience may be considered. 

• Relevant professional accreditation, registration or industry standing where applicable. 

• Demonstrated academic leadership experience in higher education, including direct management of academic staff and Course Coordinators. 

• Experience leading curriculum design, review, quality assurance and accreditation at discipline or portfolio level. 

• Demonstrated success in improving student outcomes, retention and graduate employability. 

• Experience building industry, professional or community partnerships relevant to the discipline. 

• Strong knowledge of higher education governance, regulatory and quality assurance frameworks, including TEQSA, AQF and HESF. 

• Demonstrated contribution to scholarship, research and/or professional practice relevant to the discipline. 

• Strong communication, influencing, stakeholder engagement, coaching and change leadership capability.
