The Opportunity
At Hitachi Energy, we're helping shape a more sustainable, reliable, and resilient energy future. As demand for electricity continues to grow through data centers, electrification, and grid modernization, utilities are turning to innovative technologies that increase transmission capacity, improve power quality, and strengthen grid stability. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to large-scale transmission and grid integration projects that help keep power flowing to communities, businesses, and critical infrastructure across North America. These are funded, high-impact projects supporting some of the region's largest utility customers and driving significant business growth.
As a Senior Auxiliary Power Engineer, you will play a key role in designing the low and medium voltage auxiliary power systems that support high-voltage transmission and FACTS installations. You will work alongside experienced engineering professionals on complex projects, applying your technical expertise to solve challenging engineering problems while helping deliver reliable, cost-effective solutions for our customers. This hybrid position offers flexibility to work from our Raleigh or Cary, North Carolina offices, with a typical schedule of two to three days onsite per week. Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures and guidelines.
How You'll Make an Impact
Design MV and LV auxiliary power systems for large-scale transmission and grid integration projects.
Develop single-line diagrams, load lists, equipment specifications, and engineering documentation.
Perform ETAP studies including short circuit, load flow, protection coordination, and arc flash analysis.
Design AC and DC auxiliary systems, including distribution panels, battery systems, chargers, UPS systems, and transfer switches.
Conduct cable sizing, equipment sizing, and material estimation activities.
Review supplier drawings, support factory acceptance testing, and provide commissioning support.
Collaborate with electrical lead engineers, project teams, suppliers, and customers to deliver successful project outcomes.
Drive continuous improvement by developing and enhancing engineering templates, standards, and best practices.
Your Background
Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering.
Minimum 5 years of experience in auxiliary power, industrial power systems, utility engineering, substation engineering, or related electrical design environments.
Strong knowledge of low and medium voltage power distribution systems, including AC and DC auxiliary systems.
Hands-on experience using ETAP for electrical system studies; experience with equivalent software such as Aspen or SKM may also be considered.
Experience with cable sizing, protection coordination, battery sizing, load flow analysis, and related electrical studies.
Candidate must already have authorization to work in the United States.
