The Role

SMEC is seeking a Senior & Associate Engineers - Roads & Highways (Utilities) to join our Sydney team. In this role, you will play a key technical leadership position in the planning, design and delivery of major transport infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on utility coordination, service investigations, authority engagement and integrated corridor design outcomes. It is an opportunity to join an expanding team and contribute to the growth and development of the Utilities capability in NSW & nationally.
Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers and project leaders, you will lead the identification and management of utility risks and opportunities across complex infrastructure projects while ensuring high-quality design outcomes are delivered to clients. You will also provide technical guidance to junior engineers, contribute to project delivery and support the continued growth of SMEC's Roads & Highways capability.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior engineer looking to further develop their leadership capabilities and contribute to some of Australia's most significant transport infrastructure projects within a leading consultancy.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead the planning, design and delivery of roads, highways and utility coordination projects across a diverse portfolio of transport infrastructure projects.
- Provide technical leadership in the identification, assessment and resolution of utility conflicts, relocations and service impacts.
- Lead utility authority engagement, approvals and coordination activities to achieve project objectives and successful delivery outcomes.
- Develop, review and approve engineering designs using 12d Model and other relevant design software.
- Ensure project outputs comply with relevant Australian Standards, Austroads guidelines, client requirements and SMEC quality systems.
- Prepare, review and oversee technical reports, specifications, design documentation and project deliverables.
- Manage project packages, programmes, budgets and resource requirements to support successful project outcomes.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams to achieve integrated, practical and efficient design solutions.
- Identify technical risks, opportunities and value engineering initiatives throughout project lifecycles.
- Undertake design reviews and provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with utility providers, clients, local authorities, contractors and other key stakeholders.
- Contribute to business development activities, including proposal preparation, client engagement and identifying future opportunities.
- Champion Safety in Design principles and support the delivery of safe, sustainable and resilient infrastructure outcomes.
About You
Suitable applicants will have:
- A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- 6 to 12 years of experience in roads and highways engineering, including utility coordination and infrastructure design. Experience with TfNSW is highly regarded.
- Strong knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, Austroads guidelines, utility authority requirements, industry specifications and approval processes.
- Demonstrated experience delivering complex roads, highways and utility projects across planning, concept, detailed design and delivery phases.
- Advanced capability in 12d Model and other relevant engineering design software.
- Proven experience leading utility investigations, service authority coordination, conflict assessments and relocation strategies on major infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated ability to manage project deliverables, budgets, programmes and technical quality outcomes.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience liaising directly with clients, utility providers, contractors and government agencies.
- Experience preparing and reviewing technical reports, specifications, design documentation and project deliverables.
- Proven ability to mentor and support junior engineers and contribute positively to team development.
- Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery frameworks, risk management and contractual obligations.
- A proactive, client-focused approach with the ability to identify opportunities and deliver practical engineering solutions.
- Sound understanding of WHS requirements, Safety in Design principles and risk management practices.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and contribute effectively across multiple projects and project teams.
- A commitment to continuous professional development, with Chartered status or progress towards Chartered Engineer accreditation highly regarded.
