Description

Join Our Mission to Advance Trusted Quantum Communication

At Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH (qtlabs), we are developing next-generation quantum communication technologies for space and terrestrial applications. Our work combines quantum optics, cryptography, and advanced engineering to create practical systems for secure communication in the quantum era.

Based in Vienna, our team brings together experts in quantum key distribution (QKD), optical communication, system engineering, and security-critical technologies. We are now looking for an Expert for secure implementation of QKD Systems to strengthen our expertise in the secure implementation, validation, and certification readiness of QKD devices and networks.

Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

About the role

We are looking for a hands-on Electrical & Automation Technician who enjoys taking a project from an electrical schematic to a fully assembled and working control panel.

You will design, build, wire and commission compact control cabinets containing power supplies, PCs, a safety PLC and relays. You will also develop and test the PLC programs required to operate these systems.

This is a practical role combining electrical design, panel assembly and automation not a purely desk-based engineering or software development position.

Your responsibilities

  • Electrical design: Create electrical schematics, cabinet layouts, bills of materials and terminal plans. Select and size components, power supplies, wiring and protective devices.
  • Panel assembly and wiring: Install components, prepare and route cables, wire terminals and label equipment. Build well-organised panels that are easy to inspect and maintain.
  • PLC programming: Develop, modify and troubleshoot small PLC applications. Implement safety-related logic based on defined and approved safety requirements.
  • Testing and commissioning: Carry out electrical checks and functional tests within your qualifications and authorisation. Diagnose faults and coordinate safety-related testing and validation with the responsible internal or external specialist.
  • Documentation and improvements: Maintain accurate as-built drawings, software backups and test records. Improve designs to make future builds simpler and more consistent.
Your background

You have completed an apprenticeship in electrical engineering, mechatronics or automation, a relevant HTL qualification, or equivalent technical training. A university degree is not required.

We are looking for someone with

  • Practical experience in control panel assembly and wiring, ideally including projects you have also planned yourself.
  • The ability to create and interpret electrical schematics using electrical CAD software.
  • Experience programming and troubleshooting small PLC applications. Experience with safety PLCs is a strong advantage.
  • A sound understanding of electrical protection, earthing, component selection and safe working practices.
  • A careful, organised working style and the ability to work independently while recognising when specialist input or review is needed.

Experience with Eplan (Autodesk electrical or similar) and Siemes TIA-Portal would be particularly useful.

What makes this role interesting

You will work across the complete build process rather than being limited to a single task. You will see your designs become physical systems, test your own work and use what you learn to improve the next build.

The focus is on compact, practical control systems and dependable implementation—not on developing large, complex automation software.

What We Offer
  • The opportunity to work on cutting-edge quantum communication technologies with real-world security impact.
  • The opportunity to grow within the company and develop into a senior role over time.
  • A technical role at the intersection of QKD, cybersecurity, system engineering, certification, and space communication.
  • The chance to shape how QKD devices are securely implemented, validated, certified, and integrated into future communication networks.
  • Collaboration with leading experts, international partners, governmental stakeholders, and customers.
  • A dynamic deep-tech environment with short decision paths and strong technical ownership.
  • A modern workplace in Vienna with flexible and hybrid working options.

The minimum gross salary for this position is € 3.157,47 per month (based on full-time employment) in accordance with the collective agreement. However, there is a willingness to offer a higher salary depending on experience and qualifications.

Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees!

We look forward to receiving your application!
