The School of Medicine Dean’s Office has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist, to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Departmental Computing (Assistant Director) the Senior Computer Specialist (Specialist) serves as a flexible resource that works independently to support and develop VBA applications in Access and Excel linked to SQL Server, develop reports and supporting data sources, examine and analyze administrative systems, fiscal and/or administrative records, and institutional practices.
The Specialist develops data solutions and reports, providing impact assessments, training recommendations and ways to improve operations and information systems. This position has a wide range of responsibilities including application support, report development, functional requirement gathering for projects, financial reporting and analysis, operational assessments, and documenting projects, systems, and processes. As a subject matter expert, this position acts in an advisory capacity to senior management in the School providing research and analytical support on data and reporting issues.
Key Responsibilities
Development and Report Design – 70%
- Apply user-centered design practices and interview stakeholders and system users to determine functional requirements for new and existing reports, databases, and automated solutions. Create documentation to support business requirements and technical specifications.
- Design, develop, and maintain automation solutions and reports using SQL, VBA, MS Excel, MS Access, Power BI, and SSRS. Evaluate solutions based on programming complexity, long-term supportability, performance, and end-user workflow.
- Develop and enhance reports ranging from low to high complexity using SQL queries, stored procedures, VBA automation, and reporting platforms such as Power BI.
- Review and optimize existing SQL code, VBA applications, reports, and documentation to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and alignment with business requirements. Create project documentation to support agile development practices.
- Analyze relational databases, data models, and system interfaces. Validate data from multiple sources, ensure data integrity, and collaborate with developers and business users to test and verify reporting solutions.
- Provide technical support for the analysis, design, development, testing, and implementation of VBA applications, database and reporting solutions.
- Troubleshoot SQL queries, VBA applications, reporting processes, and data issues to ensure reliable, highly available reporting services.
Project Management / Business Analysis – 25%
- Serve as a technical lead or project coordinator for low- to moderately complex reporting and database development projects. Work independently or collaboratively to meet project deadlines.
- Demonstrate sound business analysis, technical problem-solving, and project management skills while balancing multiple priorities.
- Coordinate project activities, communicate progress with management, developers, customers, and end users, and identify appropriate resource requirements.
- Partner with clients to translate business requirements into SQL-based reporting, VBA automation, and database solutions while coordinating implementation with development teams.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, computer science or related field
- Four or more years of experience in Access and Excel development

Additional Qualifications
- Experience in relational database applications such as MS SQL and Access
- Experience in T-SQL and VBA: MS Access, Excel
- Experience in Power BI and/or other reporting tools
- Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for complex financial reporting situations
- Demonstrated experience working in large, highly structured environments
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity
- Ability to create accurate, cogent reports
- Proficiency with various computer programs and databases
- Effective communication skills, demonstrating diplomacy and tact
Preferred Qualifications
- Four or more years of experience in report design using Power BI, SSRS, etc.
- Experience in data and process modeling
- Proficient in SQL and VBA, MS Access, Excel, SQL Server Reporting Services and Power BI, or similar (C#, etc.)
