The Consumer Science Department in the School of Human Ecology (SoHE) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison invites applications for two open-rank, renewable, non-tenure-track Teaching Faculty positions. Rank is commensurate with the successful candidate’s professional and teaching experience. Reporting to the Chair of Consumer Science, the Teaching Faculty members will have instructional (80%) and programmatic (20%) responsibilities, with a primary focus on consumer behavior and marketplace studies. The positions carry no research expectations and typically involve teaching four courses per semester (12 credits per semester; 24 credits annually).
The successful candidates will develop and teach undergraduate courses in consumer behavior, marketplace studies, and related areas in both on-campus and online formats. Responsibilities include designing course content, preparing syllabi and learning objectives, creating and assessing student assignments, maintaining office hours, and supporting student learning and success.
The Teaching Faculty will teach courses within the Consumer Behavior and Marketplace Studies program curriculum and related elective courses. We are seeking candidates who have expertise in at least one of the following subject areas: product development, business circularity and sustainability, consumer and brand engagement, strategic brand leadership, strategic business planning, design thinking, business consulting and client management, merchandising and retail innovation, consumer experience design, global consumer behavior, and related subjects. We do NOT expect candidates to have expertise in all of these areas, these represent topics covered throughout our program.
In addition to teaching, these positions will support the undergraduate program through activities that enhance student experiential learning and professional development, including mentoring students, supporting conference participation and competitions, and contributing to departmental initiatives. Teaching assignments may be adjusted to accommodate programmatic responsibilities or other department priorities, as determined by the Department Chair.
The successful candidates will be expected to maintain and continuously improve teaching effectiveness and remain flexible in meeting evolving departmental and program needs. Additional summer teaching opportunities, with separate compensation, may be available.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Supervises the day to day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
- Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy
- Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
- Assists in developing techniques and/or model programs for carrying out instructional goals in disciplinary area and may help identify ways in which new techniques could be of assistance
- Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
- Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
Develop relationships with community and industry partners to build a network of employers and other stakeholders to facilitate career opportunities for students and build the reputation of the program
Design career development initiatives to help students with internships and career readiness

Required Qualifications:
The Teaching Faculty rank (I, II, or III) is commensurate with experience levels in industry and teaching experience. Qualified candidates will have the following skills and abilities:
- Industry experience in retail, marketing, consumer research or related field
- Previous teaching experience OR transferable skills with motivation to excel in higher education
- Strong communication skills
- Evidence of innovativeness and creativity

Education: A Master’s degree is required, preferably in Consumer Science, Business Administration, Marketing or a closely related field.

DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER SCIENCE: The Department of Consumer Science increases knowledge about the interaction of consumers as individuals and household members with public and private markets for goods and services. Activities of the department are designed to foster development of a fair marketplace that enhances the interests and well-being of consumers, families and communities. The Department is home to a Ph.D. program in Consumer Behavior & Family Economics and two undergraduate majors in Consumer Behavior & Marketplace Studies and Personal Finance.
