Job Description
Reuters is seeking an experienced editor and newsroom leader with a strong track record of producing ambitious, exclusive and impactful journalism to serve as France & Benelux Bureau Chief.
Based in Paris, you will work with text, photo and video journalists across France, Belgium and the Netherlands to drive original reporting, distinctive storytelling and agenda-setting analysis on some of the biggest issues facing Europe. With the French Presidential election in April 2027, you will need to hit the ground running to deliver exclusive and enterprising journalism on French politics, economics and the broader social challenges facing the EU’s second largest economy.
You will help us break news on EU regulation and how the bloc tries to counter the slowdown in its economic firepower compared with the US and China. You will also cover the fortunes of the EU as an institution, including the threat from ascendant far-right parties seeking to curb Brussels’ power.
Reporting to the Europe Editor, the successful candidate will lead smart, deeply reported coverage of these issues and beyond; work closely with the bureau’s Breaking and Daily News Editor on major news events and follow-up reporting; and help integrate news operations so journalists collaborate as one team and stories are published in the most compelling formats. Travel may be required to conduct fieldwork or cover major stories.
Key Responsibilities
- Editorial leadership: Lead a team of correspondents and visual journalists across France & Benelux to develop deeper and exclusive stories that strengthen Reuters’ distinctive coverage.
- Integrated coverage: Coordinate text, photo and video journalists as one team, ensuring stories are reported and published in the formats that best serve regional and global audiences.
- Standards and collaboration: Uphold Reuters standards of speed, accuracy, fairness and independence across all our journalism.
- People leadership: Build an inclusive, collaborative and high-performing culture, developing talent and supporting recruitment, succession planning and workforce needs across multiple locations.
- Safety: Maintain a strong focus on staff safety and risk management.
- Collaboration & Innovation: Work closely with global and regional editing teams to align priorities; champion innovation in news coverage and newsroom workflows including responsible use of AI tools; ensure Reuters' standards of speed, accuracy, fairness and independence.
- Resource and operational management: Use regional editorial budgets, staffing and freelancer or stringer deployment responsibly, balancing editorial ambition with financial discipline and operational needs.
Required Qualifications
- Editorial track record: Demonstrated success in delivering exclusive and impactful journalism. Outstanding news judgment and the ability to make confident decisions under pressure while upholding Reuters standards.
- Regional knowledge: Strong understanding of the political, economic, business and social landscape of France & Benelux.
- Leadership and management: Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop journalists across multiple locations and cultures, set priorities and manage change.
- Multi-format expertise: Deep expertise in text or visual journalism, paired with a strong understanding of integrated text, pictures and video newsgathering and production.
- Financial and operational management: Experience managing editorial budgets, staffing and freelance resources.
- Communication and innovation: Excellent communication, collaboration, organisational skills and fluency in English.
- Standards: A firm commitment to the Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity and freedom from bias.
- Language Requirements: Fluency in English; proficiency in French and/or Dutch.
Preferred Qualifications
- International Coverage: Experience covering major geopolitical and regulatory developments with global implications.
- AI & Technology: Understanding of AI tools and their application in newsroom workflows.
- Digital Innovation: Track record of driving innovation in digital news delivery, audience engagement and editorial storytelling.
- Additional Languages: Proficiency in other European languages.
