Description
Under the direction of the Police Commander, the Detective Sergeant serves as a first-line supervisor responsible for overseeing criminal investigations and assigned personnel. The position conducts and reviews investigations, supervises officers, ensures compliance with department policies and applicable laws, provides training and mentorship, coordinates with other agencies, and performs related law enforcement and administrative duties.
Full Salary Range for Police Sergeant Position: $77,624 to $120,420
Placement at hire will be based on training and years of experience
Compensation: Assignment to the Detective Sergeant position will add 5% Special Assignment pay to posted salary range. This assignment pay will continue while employed in that position, in addition to applicable on-call pay.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises, assigns, trains, mentors, and evaluates assigned personnel and ensures compliance with department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Conducts, coordinates, and oversees investigations involving crimes against persons, property, narcotics, and other criminal offenses.
- Reviews, critiques, and approves reports and casework for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with department standards.
- Conducts daily briefings and provides training regarding current criminal activity, investigative techniques, legal updates, policies, procedures, and special assignments.
- Monitors personnel performance and equipment; maintains work records and completes performance evaluations.
- Identifies and reports misconduct, neglect of duty, incompetence, or violations of department rules and regulations.
- Develops and maintains professional relationships with law enforcement and other agencies and coordinates investigative activities and offender apprehension.
- Performs administrative duties, including policy development, complaint follow-up, meetings, and training.
- Enforces federal, state, and local laws and ordinances and performs Police Officer or Shift Supervisor duties when required.
- Makes court appearances and provides testimony as necessary.
- Participates in crime prevention, community relations, and community events.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 15 years of law enforcement experience, with a minimum of 5 years assigned to criminal investigations, preferably 10 years’ experience in criminal investigations.
- AZPOST Peace Officer Certification.
- Valid Arizona Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- No departmental discipline resulting in action beyond a written reprimand within the previous twelve (12) months.
- Knowledge of law enforcement practices, criminal investigations, applicable laws, department policies, and court procedures.
- Ability to effectively supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate personnel; exercise sound judgment; analyze situations objectively; communicate effectively; maintain composure under stressful conditions; and establish effective relationships with employees and the community.
- Ability to safely and effectively operate firearms, vehicles, computers, communications equipment, and other law enforcement equipment and perform the physical requirements of law enforcement duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in office, field, and outdoor environments, including exposure to adverse weather conditions and potential personal danger. The position requires sufficient physical ability, mobility, stamina, vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to perform investigations, surveillance, searches, operate vehicles and equipment, and perform other law enforcement duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
