We are seeking a skilled, knowledgeable, and experienced accountant to join the team as an Accounts Payable Specialist (Fiscal Specialist III). In addition to the current opening, this recruitment may be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to fill future Project/Program Manager II career service and term-limited temporary openings within the Parks Division or throughout the Department of Natural Resources & Parks (DNRP) over the next six months.
About the Role:
As the Accounts Payable Specialist for King County Parks’ Accounting and Fiscal Administration Team, you will work both independently and collaboratively to deliver essential accounts payable functions. Reporting to the Accounting Supervisor (Business and Finance Officer IV), you will manage the Parks AP Inbox, process i-Expense reports, and handle P-card receipts and requisitions. You will also have opportunities to cross-train in employee reimbursements, check deposits, and other AP functions.
You will help maintain strong financial and internal controls, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.

About the Team:
The Accounting and Fiscal Administration Team, part of the Finance, Budget & Planning section, plays a critical role in advancing the Parks Division’s mission to steward, enhance, and expand parks, trails, open spaces, and environmental initiatives that support healthy, thriving communities throughout King County. As the division’s financial backbone, the team provides strategic financial planning, fiscal stewardship, and operational support for a system that includes more than 205 parks, 175 miles of regional trails, and 215 miles of backcountry trails.

What You Will Be Doing:
- Financial Transactions: Process a high volume of payment requests with proper approvals/ authorizations, entering invoices and disbursement requests accurately and in compliance financial policies into the accounting system.
Payment Processing: Ensure timely and accurate payment of invoices and P-card receipts in accordance with established policies/procedures. - Requisitions: Prepare requisitions for payments to contractors, consultants, agencies, and vendors based on approved invoices.
- Record Keeping: Maintain organized financial files and ensure all billing and payment documentation is filed in chronological order.
- Policy Communication: Interpret and communicate relevant policies, procedures, codes, and regulations to internal and external partners while handling sensitive/confidential information professionally/responsibly.
- Additional Duties: Provide backup support to team members and assist with other tasks to ensure smooth and seamless financial operations.
Qualifications You Bring:
- Experience: Professional experience in processing, reviewing, and/or monitoring high volume AP transactions to include reconciling invoices, processing payments, and resolving payment discrepancies.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in using Enterprise Resource Programs (ERP) (for example Oracle EBS, SAP, Workday) and MS Office, with advanced skills in MS Excel for daily accounting, financial transactions and process optimization.
- Time Management: Proven track record in managing competing priorities and processing high volume of transactions under tight deadlines with meticulous attention to detail.
- Customer Service: Demonstrated skills in providing front-line customer service in accounts payable or related accounting field, acting with customers in mind and using discretion, patience, etiquette, and professionalism.
- Autonomy and Collaboration: Ability to complete assignments and tasks autonomously or by collaborating effectively within a team setting.
- Communication: Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey information, provide directions, and deliver training to diverse groups, including technical and non-technical staff.

It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Knowledge of public sector/governmental accounting and financial operations.
- Demonstrated experience processing high volumes of P-Card transactions, expense reports, purchase requisitions, and reconciling purchase orders to support procurement.
Work Location: The Accounting and Fiscal Administration Team works in a hybrid model, with days in the office as well as telecommuting. The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change. The primary onsite location is King Street Center, 201 S. Jackson, Seattle, Washington 98104.
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will join an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment. Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
- Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
