This role provides advanced technical leadership on complex bridge and transportation structure projects in New Mexico and across our national practice. The ideal candidate is a trusted technical resource who can establish design protocols, partner effectively with contractor teams, resolve unusual engineering challenges, lead technical reviews, mentor staff, and strengthen the team's bridge engineering capabilities.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Serve as structures lead and subject matter expert for complex or nonstandard bridge and structural engineering assignments, including design-build and alternative delivery projects.
- Coordinate closely with contractor partners, owners, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver structural design on fast-track schedules.
- Support Wilson & Company’s national bridge practice by providing technical leadership, reviews, and expertise on projects in multiple states.
- Establish design criteria, analysis methods, modeling strategies, and technical approaches for assigned projects.
- Plan and deliver structural design packages that support construction sequencing and schedule.
- Perform and oversee advanced analysis and design for reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, structural steel, earth-retaining systems, drainage structures, and related transportation facilities.
- Interpret and apply AASHTO, AREMA, owner, and agency requirements.
- Lead independent technical reviews, quality-control reviews, and comment resolution.
- Provide consultation to project managers and multidisciplinary teams regarding technical risk, constructability, accelerated bridge construction, rehabilitation strategies, and design alternatives, including ATCs and value engineering.
- Document significant engineering decisions, assumptions, limitations, and recommendations.
- Develop technical standards, tools, calculation methods, training materials, and best practices for the Bridge team.
- Mentor engineers and technical staff through design reviews, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
- Support proposals, interviews, and client meetings by developing technical strategies and communicating specialized expertise.
- Support construction administration and lead design-change management, RFIs, field changes, and resolution of complex technical issues during construction
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Doctorate in Civil or Structural Engineering preferred.
- 15+ years of structural engineering experience involving bridges, retaining walls, or other transportation structures.
- Professional Engineer license, with the ability to obtain New Mexico licensure within six months of hire.
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of bridge analysis, design, rehabilitation, load rating, seismic design, complex geometry, railroad structures, or related structural engineering practice.
- Experience leading complex technical assignments and reviewing the work of other engineers.
- Advanced knowledge of applicable AASHTO and/or AREMA requirements.
- Experience with plan development, design calculations, specifications, construction documentation, and quality control and quality assurance for highway and/or railroad structures.
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, contractors, project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of design-build or alternative delivery structural engineering experience involving bridges, retaining walls, or other transportation structures, ideally as structures lead or structural design manager.
- Experience developing ATCs, working within contractor-led teams, and delivering structural design under schedule and budget constraints.
- Experience with accelerated bridge construction (ABC).
- Experience developing technical standards, training, calculation tools, or design guidance.
- Experience with CSiBridge, LEAP Bridge Concrete, MDX, MIDAS, RISA, LPile, Mathcad, or related structural engineering software.
- Recognized technical leadership through specialized project experience, presentations, publications, committees, or industry involvement.
