At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale

Work Arrangement

This role is hybrid. The selected candidate is expected to report to the Cole Engineering Center Podium a minimum of three days (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) per week, or as dictated by the business.

The Role
The Quality, Reliability & Durability (QRD) Engineer – Mechatronic Hardware is responsible for improving customer satisfaction and reducing warranty exposure by leading field issue identification, analysis, and resolution for vehicle mechatronic hardware and embedded control systems.
This role connects customer experience, data analytics, and product engineering within Vehicle Software and Electronics Engineering Quality (VSEE Quality) to drive both short‑term containment and long‑term quality improvements across global vehicle programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze field data including DTCs, warranty claims, plant data, service information, and customer feedback in order to create actionable plans for field resolution.

  • Identify, partition (HW vs. SW), prioritize, and track issues using GM systems and dashboards.

  • Represent VSEE QRD in CPIT / Focus CPIT, SMT Core PDT, QRD Reviews, daily and weekly QRD calls, and other escalation forums as required.

  • Plan and implement target sufficiency actions to address QRD issues, ensuring temporary containment and permanent corrective actions are driven to closure.

  • Identify and manage breakpoints (BP) for service, plant, and OTA actions.

  • Forecast quality and warranty performance targets and track progress against commitments.

  • Track trends, Pareto drivers, and maintain Top 20 issue lists.

  • Proactively identify emerging issues using plant, service, and field data.

  • Support fast response activities, service garage escalations, and read‑across initiatives across programs.

  • Coordinate and lead global QRD alignment (GMNA priority) through influence.

  • Communicate clearly with engineering, manufacturing, service, and supplier teams.

  • Balance quality improvements with cost and warranty impact considerations.

Minimum (Required) Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Systems, or related).

  • Experience with vehicle systems, mechatronic hardware, or embedded control systems, SW release Cadence, OTA

  • Experience analyzing warranty, DTC, or field performance data.

  • Use of QRD tools such as: SI, TrackerGart, QDAP, DAS, GWM, MERS

  • Ability to lead cross‑functional issue resolution efforts.

  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Familiarity with AI‑enabled tools, automation, or analytics to improve QRD efficiency (e.g., workflow automation, dashboard automation, data triage, AI‑assisted analysis).

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in Quality, Reliability & Durability (QRD), warranty, or field quality roles.

  • Experience supporting CPIT, Focus CPIT, SMT Core PDT, and escalation forums.

  • Knowledge of HW vs. SW issue partitioning and corrective‑action processes.

  • Experience working with global teams and suppliers.

  • Interest in leveraging digital tools and automation to standardize QRD work.

  • Automotive OEM or supplier experience.

Up to 10% travel to suppliers and assembly plants
