Summary
The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization. The Robinson Nuclear Station (RNP) CDE team manages the capital engineering change portfolio at the RNP site in Hartsville, SC. The RNP CDE Electrical Team is seeking to fill the position of Lead Electrical Design Engineer.
Responsibilities
- Independently develop the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for engineering design changes that include but are not limited to AC power systems, DC power systems, Large AC motors, Transformers, Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, Protective Relaying, Voltage Regulators, Breakers, etc.
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
- Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decisions that may affect the work of the team.
- Independently prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes routine and complex engineering projects with minimal oversight and ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
- Mentors less experienced engineers in application of engineering technical rigor and technical curiosity.
- Ability to fill-in during absence of department manager.
Basic/Required Qualifications
The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
Lead Electrical Design Engineer
- 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
- Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
- Bachelors in Engineering must be from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer.
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Nuclear requirements for the Lead level include either a Professional Engineer registration OR one of the following: a Masters Degree in a technical discipline, SRO certification, an RO or SRO license, or Technical Nuclear certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- State registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient in principles of project management.
- Experience in the utility industry, specifically the nuclear industry.
- Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.
- Working level knowledge of ETAP software program.
- Working level knowledge of nuclear industry cyber security control practices
Special Requirements
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
- Additional hours expected during scheduled refueling outages.
- Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions
- Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
- Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 2 full workdays per regular workweek. The work week is Monday – Thursday, 10-hour days.
Travel Requirements
5-15%
