About this Job
As the Regional Director (RD) of Cardiovascular Services for the Baltimore Region, the RD will oversee Baltimore Ambulatory Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Advanced Heart Failure, and Electrophysiology at all locations including MMG sites of service and MedStar Baltimore hospitals: MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, MedStar Harbor Hospital. The RD will be responsible for assisting the Physician Executive Director in planning, directing, and overseeing the administrative and educational functions to ensure that Hospital, MMG, MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute (MHVI) and departmental goals and objectives are met.
The RD shall directly report to the Physician Executive Director MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute.
Duties and Responsibilities
1.The RD shall provide leadership for the cardiovascular services in the Baltimore region:
b. Providing clinical oversight and professional leadership for clinicians practicing within the service line.
c. Overseeing credentialing, clinical standards, and professional activities of clinicians.
d. Coordinating physician recruitment, workforce planning, and deployment across the region
e. Developing regional clinical growth and outreach strategies.
f. Coordinating the development of marketing strategies and program expansion initiatives.
g. Overseeing planning for medical equipment, facilities, and clinical personnel required to support service line operations.
2.The RD shall oversee the operational management of the service line and shall:
a. Maintain an effective organizational structure for the regional Cardiology service.
b. Participate in system, regional, and hospital committees as assigned.c. Conduct regional meetings to review clinical performance and operational effectiveness.d. Assist in preparation of annual operational reports, strategic plans, and budget planning.e. Establish policies and procedures consistent with: i. The Joint Commission ii. Applicable Boards of Directors iii. Applicable medical staff bylaws and regulationsf. Coordinate planning efforts to enhance integration of clinical programs and reduce duplication across facilities.
3. The RD shall oversee quality and performance improvement activities for the service line and shall:
a. Establish and monitor performance improvement programs for Cardiology.b. Maintain a continuing review of the professional performance of practitioners.c. Conduct periodic reviews evaluating the appropriateness and outcomes of clinical care.d. Provide recommendations to the medical staff regarding appointments, reappointments, and delineation of privileges.e. Support physicians in the management of complex or high‑risk clinical cases when requested.
4. The RD shall provide leadership for education and training programs within the service line as applicable, including:
a. Supervising and participating in graduate medical education programs.b. Supporting undergraduate medical education and continuing medical education activities.c. Conducting clinical teaching rounds, conferences, and educational sessions for trainees.d. Promoting faculty engagement in teaching and academic development.
5. The RD shall support and advance research and innovation within the service line by:
a. Supporting the development of clinical and translational research programs.b. Initiating or supervising research protocols and collaborative studies.c. Supporting the pursuit of external funding and grant opportunities.d. Encouraging scholarly dissemination through publications, presentations, and academic collaboration.
The RD shall carry out these responsibilities in collaboration with MedStar Health leadership, MedStar Medical Group, MHVI, and hospital leadership, supporting the shared mission of advancing clinical excellence, education, research, and innovation within MedStar Health.
Qualifications
1. Board Certified in Cardiovascular Diseases.
2. Eligible for appointment to the Active Staff of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Harbor Hospital and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital.
3. Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Maryland
This role is a 1.0 FTE role, comprised of .5 FTE as the Regional Director of Cardiovascular Services, Baltimore and .5 FTE in clinical cardiology at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.
