Job Description Summary
Provides marketing/communications support for a business. Activities could include analyses of market conditions, trends, and forecasts, and wider marketing/events support. Works under standard policies and procedures with some autonomy; has a weekly/monthly focus.
To analyse and forecast platinum group metal (PGM) demand in China in support of JM’s group and business functions, and its customers. To help identify and evaluate (potential) new PGM applications. To develop a broad-based knowledge of the wider PGM supply-demand fundamentals.
Principal accountabilities
- Continuously monitor assigned areas of platinum group metal (PGM) supply and demand, report significant developments to the China Research team and senior management, with recommendations for action where appropriate.
- Use existing models, and develop new models as appropriate, to analyse complex business and technical indicators and to forecast future demand and/or supply for PGM in specific applications and regions as allocated by senior leadership.
- Identify new (and potential) uses of PGM in assigned applications as they emerge. Work with the China team to assess feasibility of these applications and recommendations for action.
- Deliver a coherent near and long-term view of PGM demand in China. Take ownership to drive a deeper understanding of specific market dynamics and potential sensitivities to PGM demand and/or supply.
- To update members of other JM Sectors on the broader PGM supply-demand fundamentals and/or specific areas of interest, and support customer visits with PGM presentations as appropriate.
- Expand, build and maintain a network of contacts in international pgm related industries.
- Maintain and enhance Johnson Matthey's position as the principal international authority on the PGM by participation in conferences, seminars and other events.
- Develop an awareness of a comprehensive range of useful and dependable sources of information, evaluating those sources based on cost, reliability and effectiveness.
- Contribute to assigned ad-hoc research projects / presentations in areas of interest impacting current and future use or supply.
- Provide support in the production of Market Research reports and presentations and advise on content.
- Carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
Qualifications/ knowledge/ experience
- Educated to bachelor's degree level (B.Sc., B.Eng., or above), preferably in a scientific, engineering, mathematic or economic discipline.
- Have 2 years+ experience incorporating some exposure to industrial markets and/or the wider PGM industry, preferably in market research.
- Have well-developed numerical and analytical ability.
- Have good working knowledge of MS Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent written and spoken English& Fluent Mandarin.
- Communication: Be a skilled & confident communicator. Proven ability to present ideas and data clearly and effectively, both in written form and in oral presentations, at all levels in an organisation. Able to adapt style to suit audience to achieve positive outcomes.
- Continuous Learning & Applied learning: Applies ideas and skills to improve existing ways of working. Proactive in building knowledge, both in areas of responsibility and in areas outside own remit. Makes optimal use of learning from a variety of sources (e.g. customer visits, conferences, desk-based research etc). Asks questions in areas outside own remit.
- Building Collaborative Relationships: Experience of building network of contacts & maintaining relationships internally and externally. Works well with other team members to improve output of the group.
- Driving Execution: Proven ability to question the status quo, deal with uncertainty and use experience to make judgements based on available information to inform forecasting process.
- Planning & Organisation: Delivery focussed - can manage heavy workload and prioritise key tasks to meet deadlines, while maintaining high work standards.
