Job Summary
The Inpatient Pharmacy Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the inpatient pharmacy that includes all medication procurement, storage and preparation as it pertains to the pharmacy. This person ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal services; facilitates safe medication use, meets all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements; and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes, and standards as they pertain to all areas served by the pharmacy. This person serves as a brand ambassador of CentralusHealth, upholding the mission and values of the organization, fulfilling their role in a positive manner and with attention to detail.
Job Functions (5-10)
- Enforces policies and procedures that promote safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication use.
- Collaborate with other health care professionals to plan, monitor, review, or evaluate the quality or effectiveness of drugs or drug regimens.
- Reviews, evaluates and advises on all physicians' medication orders for completeness and appropriateness prior to dispensing; consults with physicians and nurses to clarify orders as needed.
- Participates in medication protocol and order set creation discussions and performs medication utilization reviews and PI projects to optimize drug therapy utilization.
- Collaborates with pharmacy director to manage planned and unplanned staff absences to maintain optimal staffing levels at outpatient areas.
- Conducts all performance evaluations of the staff and responds to the day-to-day personnel activities including corrective action oversight.
- Administers the corrective action and disciplinary processes to constructively address and resolve staff performance concerns.
- Manages all pharmacy services staff in production of admixtures, verifies accuracy of procedures, proper regimen interpretation, order validation, drug preparation and labeling.
- Ensures the competency trainings of staff are up-to-date
- Plan for and assist in the treatment of spills, extravasation of vesicants and irritants, and management of hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reactions.
- Understands the functions of each pharmacy information system and demonstrates an ability to effectively use each system.
- Ensures strict accountability of all medications (both controlled and non-controlled) dispensed to patients and automated dispensing cabinets.
- Ensures compliance in meeting standards of accrediting bodies and regulatory agencies relative to procuring, distribution, storage, dispensing of medication, and the certification of sterile compounding equipment.
- Represents the department as required at interdepartmental meeting and /or committee assignments.
- Provides periodic reports as requested by supporting departments, and monitors key performance indicators of the department to track outcomes.
- Implements performance improvement projects to address operational, quality, and financial risks.
- Collaborates with the director to investigate and address operational variance reports in accordance with established processes.
- Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
Education / Experience Qualifications
Required:
- Education - Graduate of an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy with either a BS pharmacy or PharmD required.
- Experience - 3 years health system experienced preferred, with 1 year in pharmacy practice preferred. Board Certification or PGY1/PGY2 preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard);
- May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit-dose cassettes, and IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers);
- Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary;
- Must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
