Position Title: Occupational & Environmental Health (OEH) Coordinator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) & Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH)

Reports To: Chief Medical Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Occupational & Environmental Health (OEH) Coordinator is a staff-level position that coordinates REHAB’s comprehensive employee health, safety, and wellness programs. Operating under the administrative supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, this role actively tracks, enforces, and reports on crucial safety metrics, including staff injuries, workers' compensation claims, and organization-wide health compliance requirements. The Coordinator serves an important role within the facility by spearheading the Staff Injury Reduction Taskforce, and acting as the Administrator for the Exposure Control Plan and Respiratory Protection Program.  The Coordinator directly reports key safety and injury metrics to the Safety Council to drive facility-wide process improvements. 

Wage Range: $21.01 per hour to $31.52 per hour 

The actual wage is dependent on the applicant's relevant experience and qualifications for this position. The wage range for this position may be subject to change in the future depending on a variety of factors such as market conditions, business needs, legal developments, and other appropriate factors.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education/certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, occupational health, public health, or a related field. 

  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification to be obtained before hire date. 

 

Skills/Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in occupational health, employee safety, or other equivalent field.

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and healthcare compliance standards.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments and with key stakeholders.

  • Strong organizational and project management capabilities, with meticulous attention to detail in data management, documentation, and reporting.

  • Proficiency in computer applications to support efficient documentation and problem-solving.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certifications

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP). 

 

Skills/Experience:

  • Proven ability to lead committees, taskforces, or performance improvement initiatives.

  • Experience working in an inpatient rehabilitation, subacute rehabilitation, or acute hospital setting. 

  • Advanced knowledge of workers' compensation case management. 

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace applications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Serve as the designated Exposure Control Plan Administrator and Respiratory Protection Program Administrator for the facility.

  • Spearhead the multi-disciplinary Staff Injury Reduction Taskforce and champion the Safe Patient Handling Program.

  • Manage and investigate all employee injuries, illnesses, and exposure incidents.

  • Assist with workers' compensation claims, modified duty assignments, and health-related work accommodations.

  • Ensure compliance with institutional health requirements, such as tracking vaccination status and maintaining annual TB clearance records.

  • Compile and submit quarterly workplace safety and injury data reports to the Safety Council.

  • Develop, review, and update occupational and environmental health policies.

  • Ensure strict facility adherence to federal OSHA regulations and reporting standards.

  • Align workplace health and safety practices with Hawaii state (HIOSH) requirements.

  • Maintain continuous compliance with relevant hospital accreditation safety standards.  Participate in hospital accreditation activities.

  • Design and deliver ongoing staff education programs regarding workplace safety and mechanics.

  • Launch data-driven process improvement projects targeting identified risks.

  • Partner with department leadership on compliance data.

  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to maintain compliance and engage in performance improvement initiatives.

  • Temporary Assistance: Provide temporary assistance during absences of the Infection Preventionist.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
