The Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health in the College of Business and Economics seeks an Assistant Professor.

Job Summary:

The Department of Occupational & Environmental Safety & Health (OESH) in the College of Business and Economics (CoBE) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a dedicated educator, scholar, and colleague to join our faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental/Occupational Safety & Health, beginning August 2027. This position carries a 24-credit annual teaching load* with an emphasis on high-impact instructional practices, student success, research, and professional service. The successful candidate will teach face-to-face and online undergraduate courses for the Occupational Safety B.S. and graduate courses for the M.S. in Environmental Safety & Health (online) and will pursue an active research agenda that complements existing faculty expertise. Areas of research interest may include one or more of the following:

• Construction safety and health

• Risk management and loss control

• ISO auditing/management systems and international safety and health

• Ergonomics and human factors engineering

• Environmental management

The approved standards for promotion and tenure at the time of initial contract are the standards that will be used for promotion and tenure. If there are revisions to department or college standards, a faculty member can request (in writing to the department chair) to have the revised standards applied.

Teaching & Instructional Expectations

• Course Load: Deliver 24 credits of instruction per academic year in Occupational and Environmental Safety & Health. *Faculty who maintain Scholarly Academic (SA) status under AACSB standards receive up to three credits per semester of release time to support scholarly productivity and AACSB accreditation expectations. • Office Hours for Students: Maintain at least eight office hours for students each week during the academic year. These office hours should be consistent to provide accessible student support and academic advising/mentoring. For faculty who teach a portion or all courses online, the modality of the office hours should be proportionate to the modality of the courses taught unless the department or college has additional requirements.

• Advising/Mentoring: Use the systems, “Navigate” and “Stellic” for all advising/mentoring notes.

• Communication: Maintain professional and timely responsiveness to student, colleague, and administrator inquiries via Navigate, Canvas, email, and telephone, generally within 24–48 business hours while on contract. When off contract, use the “out of office” feature in Outlook to let individuals know who to contact in your absence.

• Administrative Compliance: Ensure the punctual submission of course syllabi at the start of each term, ensuring they meet all University and system-wide requirements (UWW Syllabi Requirements).

• Contribute to curriculum development and review, including efforts supporting ABET-ANSAC accreditation and BCSP Qualified Academic Program (QAP) status.

• Accessibility: Select and develop instructional materials that are Title II (ADA) compliant. All digital course content, textbooks, and media must be accessible to students with disabilities to ensure an equitable learning environment.

Representative Teaching Areas

Full-time teaching responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health

• Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Applications

• Occupational Safety Management

• Graduate and undergraduate courses in Ergonomics

• Graduate and undergraduate courses in Construction Safety

• Principles of Environmental Management, along with courses focusing on hazardous materials, air pollution, and facility water management

Additional teaching responsibilities potentially include:

• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats

• Curriculum development and review for improvement and re-accreditation

• Internship supervision

• Faculty at UW-Whitewater may be required to teach online or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings or on weekends, if applicable

• Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminar or University Learning Communities, or participate in other programs geared toward improving student success

Research, Scholarship & Creative Activity

• Maintain an active scholarly agenda that contributes to the field of environmental and occupational safety and health, including applying for grants and collaborating with other faculty or members of the OESH community.

• Disseminate research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or professional exhibitions per department and college standards.

• Seek opportunities to involve undergraduate and graduate students in research initiatives and other scholarly and creative activities.

Service & Engagement

• Participate in departmental, college, and university-level meetings and committee work.

• Participate in professional and public service, and in community organizations relevant to the candidate's expertise and interests.

• Contribute to program assessment and development.

• Engage in professional outreach and service that aligns with the University Mission Statement and the Wisconsin Idea.

• Participate in at least one graduation ceremony each academic year.

The Department of Occupational & Environmental Safety & Health prepares students for rewarding careers protecting America's workforce, the public, and the natural environment. Our faculty are nationally recognized, and our graduates are highly sought after.

Coursework covers a wide range of subjects, including approaches to accident prevention, environmental protection, ergonomics, fire prevention, and legal aspects, among others. Students are provided with essential skills to recognize and evaluate risks and devise and implement effective control methods. In addition, students gain several practical work-site experiences, culminating in a full-semester internship with a practicing EHS professional. Our B.S. in Occupational Safety degree is ABET-ANSAC accredited, and both the B.S. and M.S. degrees are BCSP Qualified Academic Programs (QAP), enabling graduates to obtain the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation.

Required Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D., ScD, EdD, or equivalent) in environmental safety and health or a closely related field, including but not limited to: Environmental Health, Engineering, Public Health, Public Policy, or Risk Management and Loss Control, by the time of appointment.

• ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2027; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2028, in advance of their first scheduled review.

• Demonstrated commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate and graduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, commitment to working with inclusive populations, and serving as an active member of the university community.

• A research record in environmental safety and health, or the ability to develop and carry out a research agenda, is required.

• Good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

• Demonstrated application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the generation and presentation of instructional and assessment documents.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching, experience with Canvas, and a record of scholarly achievement.

• Professional experience in OESH and certification are desirable (e.g., CSP, CIH, REHS, CPE, ARM, CRM, PE, CHMM, REM).
