Position Summary

The Safety Coordinator develops, implements, and maintains the safety and environmental compliance program for a cabinet manufacturing facility. This role is the on-site expert for OSHA compliance, hazardous materials handling, and finishing-department safety, including water-based paint and coating systems, spray booth operations, and hazardous waste management under HAZWOPER. The Safety Coordinator delivers employee safety training, leads the plant Safety Committee, conducts inspections and incident investigations, and promotes a proactive safety culture across woodworking, finishing, assembly, and shipping/receiving operations.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Program Management

  • Develop, maintain, and enforce written safety programs and policies in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and applicable state regulations
  • Conduct routine safety audits and inspections of the woodshop, CNC and panel saw areas, edgebanding, assembly, finishing/spray booths, dust collection, and shipping/receiving docks
  • Maintain and update the Hazard Communication (HazCom) program, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), container labeling, and chemical inventories
  • Manage required OSHA programs including Lockout/Tagout, Machine Guarding, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, PPE assessments, Powered Industrial Trucks, and Combustible Dust

Finishing & Hazardous Materials

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on water-based paints, stains, primers, and topcoats: proper handling, storage, mixing, ventilation, and PPE requirements
  • Ensure spray booth, flash-off, and drying areas meet OSHA, NFPA 33, and fire code requirements, including filter changes, airflow verification, and ignition source control
  • Oversee hazardous waste generation, labeling, storage, manifesting, and disposal in accordance with EPA RCRA and state regulations
  • Maintain HAZWOPER-compliant procedures for spill prevention, containment, and emergency response; maintain spill kits and response supplies
  • Coordinate air permit compliance, VOC tracking, and environmental reporting as required
  • Administer the respiratory protection program including medical evaluations, fit testing, and respirator selection for finishing personnel

Safety Training

  • Develop and deliver new-hire safety orientation and annual refresher training for all employees
  • Conduct and document training on HazCom/SDS, HAZWOPER awareness, Lockout/Tagout, forklift operation, machine guarding, hearing protection, respirator use, fire extinguisher use, and emergency evacuation
  • Provide department-specific training for finishing, woodworking, and material handling employees
  • Maintain training records, certifications, and expiration tracking to ensure compliance

Safety Committee & Culture

  • Organize, schedule, and lead monthly Safety Committee meetings with representatives from each department
  • Prepare agendas, record minutes, track action items, and report progress to plant leadership
  • Conduct toolbox talks, safety huddles, and floor walk-throughs to engage employees and reinforce safe behaviors
  • Develop safety recognition programs and communicate safety performance to the workforce

Incident Management & Reporting

  • Lead accident, injury, and near-miss investigations; identify root causes and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain OSHA 300 logs, 300A summaries, and all required recordkeeping and postings
  • Manage workers’ compensation claims in coordination with HR and the insurance carrier; support return-to-work programs
  • Track and report safety KPIs such as TRIR, DART, near misses, and audit findings

Emergency Preparedness

  • Maintain emergency action and fire prevention plans; conduct evacuation drills
  • Ensure fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, first aid kits, AEDs, and emergency lighting are inspected and maintained
  • Coordinate with local fire department and emergency responders regarding chemical storage and facility hazards

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of safety or EHS experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards (29 CFR 1910)
  • HAZWOPER certification (40-hour or 24-hour) or ability to obtain within 90 days
  • Knowledge of water-based paint and coating systems, spray finishing operations, and associated safety and environmental requirements
  • Experience developing and delivering employee safety training
  • Experience leading or facilitating a safety committee
  • Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred

  • Experience in cabinet, millwork, furniture, or wood products manufacturing
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification
  • Certifications such as ASP, CSP, CHST, or OHST
  • Knowledge of combustible dust (NFPA 652/664) and spray finishing (NFPA 33) standards
  • Experience with EPA RCRA hazardous waste compliance and air permit reporting
  • Forklift trainer certification and First Aid/CPR/AED instructor certification
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related field

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on the production floor; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Exposure to a manufacturing environment including noise, wood dust, paint and finishing materials, and varying temperatures
  • Ability to wear PPE including respirators, hearing protection, and safety glasses as required
  • Occasional off-shift hours to support training, drills, or incident response
