Function Front-line supervision, workflow coordination and quality support
1. Role Overview
The Department Supervisor - Screens plays a hands-on leadership role in supporting the day-to-
day performance of the Screens department at Rack Systems. This position helps maintain
product quality, safe working practices, strong team standards and efficient workflow across the
department. Working closely with the Department Manager, the successful candidate will support
training, organise work areas and materials, help prioritise production, and lead by example to
build a positive, accountable and solutions-focused team culture.
2. About Rack Systems
Established in 1989, Rack Systems has evolved into the UK’s leading specialist OEM fabricator
and manufacturer for the office furniture industry. Operating from a comprehensively equipped,
purpose-built 70,000 sq ft factory complex, we design and manufacture a wide range of products
including tubular and sheet metal components, electrically operated sit/stand desk frames,
modular beam and bench systems, flip-top table mechanisms, classroom benching, upholstered
office screens, booths, sofas, and modular shelving.
Our core manufacturing competencies encompass precision sheet metal work (punching, laser
cutting, and bending), tube laser cutting, manual and robotic MIG/TIG/Laser welding, online
powder coating, CNC machining of wooden panels, sewing, and upholstery. We pride ourselves
on building long-term, co-creational relationship and delivering innovative, value-for-money
workspace solutions.
3. Key Responsibilities
Support the Department Manager in the smooth running of the Screens department, helping
the team meet daily and weekly production requirements.
Set up work areas and organise materials so that team members can work
efficiently, safely and to the required quality standards.
Help assign team members across work areas to support efficient working methods and
balanced workloads.
Support the prioritisation of orders in line with production schedules, customer
requirements and changing shop floor demands.
Positively engage with the team, offer practical solutions to problems and promote a strong
'can do' attitude throughout the department.
Take pride in personal performance and help set high behavioural and attendance
standards for others through visible, consistent leadership.
4. Safe Working, Housekeeping & Equipment Care
Follow good housekeeping practices at all times and actively promote safe working
methods across the Screens department.
Lead by example in maintaining a tidy, organised and compliant work environment that
supports both safety and productivity.
Ensure machinery and equipment are in good working order, raising maintenance
concerns promptly and supporting the upkeep of department assets.
Encourage team members to work safely, use equipment correctly and take
responsibility for their work areas.
Support continuous improvement of work practices, layout and flow so the
department operates efficiently and with minimum disruption.
5. Team Support, Training & Department Standards
Support the training of new team members so they understand processes,
expectations and Rack Systems' quality standards from the outset.
Build trust within the department by showing commitment to helping improve the team,
the work environment and overall results.
Lead by example through a positive attitude, dependable work ethic and willingness to
support colleagues across the department.
Assist with the performance review process for new team members, giving clear
feedback and highlighting training or support needs.
Proactively drive continuous improvement activities and encourage team members to
contribute ideas that improve quality, flow, efficiency and teamwork.
Carry out weekly stock checks and communicate ordering requirements to the office in a
timely and accurate manner.
6. Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
Previous experience in a manufacturing, production or workshop environment, ideally
with exposure to team support or supervisory responsibilities.
Ability to train and support new starters to achieve required quality and performance
standards.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to set up work areas, organise materials and
keep work flowing.
Good understanding of safe working practices, housekeeping standards and
equipment care.
Confident communication skills and the ability to work positively with colleagues at all
levels.
Ability to identify problems, offer practical solutions and respond positively to
changing production demands.
Reliable approach, strong personal standards and a willingness to lead by example every
day.
Desirable
Previous supervisory experience within a screens, upholstery, assembly or similar
manufacturing department.
Experience completing stock checks and communicating material requirements
accurately.
Exposure to performance reviews, continuous improvement activities or production
planning support.
