The primary function of the Resident Service Support Specialist (RS3) – Network Engineer is to provide onsite operational, engineering, and sustainment support for enterprise and tactical network infrastructures supporting U.S. Army mission requirements. This role is responsible for maintaining secure, reliable, and high-performing network environments across classified and unclassified systems.
The RS3 Network Engineer will support the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of network and cybersecurity technologies from vendors including Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, Versa Networks, and other integrated security platforms. The position requires collaboration with government personnel, cross-functional engineering teams, and cybersecurity staff to ensure network availability, compliance, and operational readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze network performance and recommend adjustments to infrastructure capacity, scalability, and performance requirements.
- Support daily network operations including maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, upgrades, and lifecycle replacement activities.
- Assist with the design, implementation, and validation of network configuration prototypes including routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and automation frameworks.
- Utilize automation and scripting tools such as Python and Ansible to streamline network administration and operational tasks.
- Monitor and maintain network availability, reliability, utilization, and overall system health.
- Review, troubleshoot, and resolve network incidents, outages, and performance degradation issues.
- Participate in the development and review of conceptual, logical, and physical network architectures.
- Implement and maintain cybersecurity measures including firewall policies, network access controls, vulnerability remediation, and security auditing procedures.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), network diagrams, and configuration baselines.
- Support compliance with DoD cybersecurity policies, RMF requirements, and Army network standards.
- Coordinate with government customers, vendors, and support teams to ensure mission continuity and successful execution of technical objectives.
- Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior personnel as required.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical troubleshooting capabilities in enterprise network environments.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and manage time effectively in a mission-focused environment.
- Experience supporting enterprise routing, switching, and network security technologies.
- Knowledge of network protocols including TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VLANs, VPNs, and routing/switching fundamentals.
- Experience with cybersecurity tools, firewall technologies, and network monitoring solutions.
- Familiarity with Linux and Windows server environments.
- Working knowledge of automation, scripting, and configuration management tools.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to operate effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to mentor junior engineers and provide constructive technical guidance.
Required Certifications
- Active CompTIA Security+ certification (DoD 8570/8140 compliant)
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) required
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) preferred
Security Clearance Requirements
- Active Secret Security Clearance required
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field; OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of direct experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Federal Government network environments.
- 3–6 years of hands-on experience in network engineering, operations, or infrastructure support roles preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting Army enterprise or tactical communications environments.
- Familiarity with Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes and STIG compliance.
- Experience with SD-WAN technologies, particularly Versa Networks solutions.
- Knowledge of virtualization technologies and cloud networking concepts.
- Prior experience working within a NOC, SOC, or mission-critical operational environment.
