Applications Engineer

Pay Range: $100,000 - $125,000 annually, based on experience
Location: Lanco Integrated – Westbrook, Maine

Lanco Integrated is a specialty automation manufacturer based in Westbrook, Maine. We design and build custom assembly automation systems, from single-station semi-automated cells to fully integrated multi-line robotic assembly solutions, for manufacturers across medical, defense, consumer, and industrial markets.

With approximately 100 employees, we operate with the technical depth of a large engineering firm and the responsiveness of a smaller organization where individual contributions are visible and valued.

Our Applications Engineering team sits at the intersection of Sales, Engineering, and Operations, and is one of the most technically demanding and commercially impactful functions in the company.

The Applications Engineer is accountable for generating the system concept, pricing, and technical description of the process. The Applications Engineer utilizes technical acumen to understand and gather customer requirements, prepare specifications, and generate quotes to support the Sales Account Manager throughout the quoting process.

This role is based at our Westbrook, Maine facility with a hybrid schedule (minimum 3 days on-site). Remote days require availability during standard business hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM ET) and access to company systems. Travel is required.
 

What You’ll Do

Technical Support & Solution Development

• Provide technical support to the Sales Account Manager throughout the quoting process.
• Establish a clear understanding of all contract documents, including customer technical specifications, user requirement specifications, component and assembly prints.
• Establish a technical solution that meets the specified statement of work.
• Assure concepts maintain technical correctness and implement Lanco standards in the concept and costing process.
• Conduct analysis of manual, automatic, and robotic operations using industry-accepted methods.
• Identify, communicate, and document risks.
• Build customer confidence by addressing technical objections and concerns from prospective customers throughout the sales cycle.

Sales & Customer Support

• Create and conduct technical presentations and demonstrations that present Lanco’s capabilities and solutions to current and prospective customers’ assist the Sales Account Manager with customer visits and online meetings.
• Provide updates to Sales and management for all concepts in process.
• Identify high-cost and/or long-lead items and work with vendors to receive quotations.
• Partner with internal technical teams to share insights from customer interactions and offer suggestions for process or solution enhancements.

Proposal & Documentation

• Define project assumptions and exceptions in the appropriate Lanco documents.
• Ensure all customer-supplied documentation (part prints, models, etc.) are current and stored in the proper locations.
• Provide Engineering with all available information needed to start a job.
• Assure the Project Binders are completed in a timely manner.
• Maintain CRM tasks and document time spent on specific projects.
• Schedule technical and financial project reviews.

Cross-Functional & Continuous Improvement

• Provide support as needed to the Operations group as projects move through design and build.
• Support other Lanco division’s Applications and Sales departments as required.
• Assist in updating the costing database.
• Assist with writing work instructions.
• Ensure ISO 9000 procedures are being followed.
• Participate in the Company Idea System, making continuous improvements as required.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by manager and/or supervisor.

 

What You Bring

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of an associate degree in mechanical, electrical, or software engineering, or an equivalent technical field.
• Minimum of 5 – 7 years of practical hands-on experience in automation and machine design.
• Practical experience and knowledge or machine design.
• Ability to work with 2D and 3D CAD systems (SolidWorks), word processing, and spreadsheet programs.
• Solid understanding of assembly automation concepts and related processes.
• Domestic and international travel may be required for customer site visits, proposal presentations, and program kickoffs.
• Ability to create and deliver technical presentations and demonstrations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Desired Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years in technical sales, applications engineering, or project management in an automation or custom manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and gather customer requirements, prepare technical specifications, and generate accurate quotes.
• Experience with CRM tools and structured proposal management processes.
• Cross-industry exposure: medical devices, consumer products, defense/aerospace, or electronics assembly automation preferred.
