Position Summary
Capital Waste Services is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Technician to support the maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our collection fleet by performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and assisting with vehicle repairs.
The ideal candidate will be mechanically inclined, safety-focused, and committed to maintaining high standards of workmanship while supporting the operational needs of the business.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Preventive Maintenance
- Perform routine preventive maintenance services on trucks, equipment, and related fleet assets.
- Conduct multi-point inspections to identify equipment deficiencies and potential failures.
- Change filters, fluids, belts, hoses, and other wear items according to maintenance schedules.
- Complete lubrication services and maintain service records.
Repairs and Diagnostics
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
- Troubleshoot engine, suspension, steering, brake, and drivetrain issues.
- Repair or replace defective components and parts.
- Assist with welding and fabrication repairs as needed.
- Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform emergency repairs when necessary.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Comply with OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Immediately report safety concerns, accidents, and equipment deficiencies.
Documentation and Communication
- Accurately complete work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance documentation.
- Communicate repair needs, parts requirements, and equipment conditions to supervisors.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work and preventive maintenance activities.
Team Support
- Work collaboratively with fleet maintenance staff and operations personnel.
- Assist other technicians with repairs as required.
- Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and skills development opportunities.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of maintenance, fleet, diesel, hydraulic, automotive, or heavy equipment repair experience.
- Basic understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment issues.
- Ability to lift up to 65 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Must successfully pass a background check.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced shop environment.
Preferred
- Experience maintaining Class 6-8 trucks, refuse vehicles, or heavy equipment.
- Diesel mechanic training or technical school certification.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- CDL or ability to obtain one.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read service manuals, diagrams, and repair procedures.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and basic electrical diagnostics.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment.
- Effective verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to workplace safety.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, crouch, and climb.
- Use hands and tools continuously throughout the workday.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and parts.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to perform duties in environments with noise, dust, grease, odors, and moving machinery.
Work Environment
This position is performed in a fleet maintenance shop and outdoor operational environment. Employees may be exposed to loud noises, moving equipment, vehicle exhaust, dirt, grease, and varying weather conditions. Proper PPE must be worn at all times when required.
