SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Transit, the Fleet Supervisor II provides strategic and operational leadership for Fleet Services within the Transit Department. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and overseeing all fleet maintenance and repair operations to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective transit services. This position includes overseeing Utility Park & Clean staff ensuring the cleanliness of the fleet, support vehicles, and bus stops including amenities at the bus stop.

This role requires strong leadership skills, sound decision-making ability, and the capacity to effectively oversee staff while managing complex and sometimes difficult situations involving personnel, safety, compliance, and service delivery. The Fleet Supervisor II must foster accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the division.

This position requires availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather and is designated as weather-essential personnel.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Staff Oversight

  • Provides direct supervision, leadership, coaching, and performance management to Fleet Supervisor I and assigned personnel.
  • Oversee daily shop operations to ensure efficiency, productivity, and adherence to safety standards.
  • Addresses personnel matters professionally, including conflict resolution, corrective action, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Leads by example in professionalism, work ethic, and adherence to City and departmental policies.
  • Develop staff through training, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Reviews subordinate work plans and operational procedures for effectiveness and compliance.
  • Investigates and responds to complaints pertaining to maintenance staff and vehicles.
  • Ensures adherence to safety standards within the maintenance team.
     

Fleet Operations & Maintenance Management

  • Oversee all aspects of Transit fleet maintenance and repair for fixed route buses, paratransit vans, and all support vehicles in the department.
  • Make recommendations that impact the department budget.
  • Oversee in-house parts management, necessary chemicals, and SDS inventory control and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with preventative maintenance schedules and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with Assistant Transit Director regarding fleet maintenance and repairs.
  • Coordinate with Grant/Compliance Coordinator regarding fleet replacement.
  • Oversee maintenance procurements including bus procurements.
  • Monitors expenditures and ensures compliance with City and Federal procurement policies.
  • Works closely with the Chief Safety Officer (CSO) to investigate accidents, injuries, and incidents that happen in the shop.
  • Prepare departmental reports as required.
  • Maintains operational readiness during emergencies, inclement weather, and high-demand situations.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment under pressure and the ability to make rational, timely decisions.
  • Updating Inventory list of assets and overseeing our Transit Asset Management plan.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Certification in Automotive Engineering or a related field and a minimum of six (6) years of experience as a Line Mechanic, including three (3) years in progressively responsible positions within a municipal fleet operation.

Valid Texas Driver’s License required.

Possession of a valid Texas Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement within one (1) year of employment.

OR: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Comprehensive knowledge of transit fleet operations and maintenance principles.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to motivate and hold staff accountable.
  • Ability to manage difficult conversations and resolve workplace conflict professionally.
  • Knowledge of shop equipment, diagnostic tools, and heavy/medium-duty fleet repair practices.
  • Proficiency in computer systems including Word, Excel, fleet management software, and data entry systems.
  • Ability to learn and implement new technologies and improve existing processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to operate all Transit Department vehicles.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated with visionary and progressive thinking.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations.
