AI Governance Analyst

Overview

Steampunk is seeking an AI Governance Analyst to operationalize a compliant AI governance capability for a large federal client, translating federal AI policy into day-to-day processes and maintaining the program's AI use case inventory and risk tracking.

Contributions

• Operationalize an AI Governance Framework, translating federal guidance (Executive Orders, OMB directives, agency guidance) into governance processes, checklists, and workflows
• Build and maintain an AI Use Case Inventory categorized by solution type, lifecycle stage, and risk tier — capturing accountable owner, human-override model, and failure response for each use case — supporting assessment of use cases and clearance of production
• Support development and maintenance of governance documentation artifacts such as model cards, system documentation, and risk assessments
• Maintain a living Mandate Compliance Matrix, AI governance dashboards, and an incident/issue tracker, including OKR and token-usage tracking
• Support the AI Compliance and Risk Management Plan, addressing bias identification/monitoring, data handling/retention, safeguards against unauthorized access, and non-discrimination confirmation (Title VII, ADA, ADEA)
• Support periodic audits of deployed/production AI use cases to confirm continued compliance
• Monitor policy trends and regulatory updates to keep governance processes current with evolving federal AI requirements
• Contribute to reusable governance templates, checklists, and tools supporting program-wide consistency
• Support agency responses to oversight data calls and draft agency-specific AI policy at client request
• Document minimum annual mission value and deliver quarterly portfolio prioritization recommendations (scale, consolidate, or retire)

 

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance
• Bachelor's degree, preferably in Public Policy, Computer Science, Data Ethics, Cybersecurity, Law, or a related field
• 5+ years of AI governance, risk, or compliance experience (policy/process focus, not AI system development)
• Demonstrated experience translating regulatory/policy guidance into operational checklists and workflows
• Familiarity with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework
• Understanding of responsible AI principles (fairness, transparency, explainability, privacy, bias mitigation) and model risk management concepts
• Working knowledge of machine learning and generative AI concepts sufficient to assess governance and risk implications (not hands-on model development)
• Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to translate policy requirements into actionable guidance for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Strong documentation and inventory-management skills

Preferred:

• Federal AI policy experience (OMB, HHS, or comparable agency guidance)
• Experience supporting AI bias/fairness assessment or model risk documentation
• Master's degree in a related field
• Experience working within an Agile delivery environment
• Relevant certifications such as CIPP/US, CIPT, or CRISC

Steampunk relies on several factors to determine salary, including but not limited to geographic location, contractual requirements, education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience. The projected compensation range for this position is $95,000 to $125,000.  The estimate displayed represents a typical annual salary range for this position.
