Description
Who We Are
Thermon is a global industrial technology leader and the world's foremost provider of mission-critical heating solutions. From power generation and semiconductors to oil & gas and food processing, our systems keep essential industries running safely, efficiently, and reliably.
We do not just make heaters-we deliver complete, end-to-end solutions that include design, installation, controls, and monitoring. Our people and products transfer the warmth needed to make life work.
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, and operating in 18 countries, Thermon is built on the values of Care, Commit, and Collaborate. We are a team of innovators and problem-solvers, united by our mission and driven by a culture of ownership and impact.
About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer with deep expertise and full-stack PCB design capability to join our R&D Controls and Accessories team.
Our products, field-deployed industrial controllers operating from -40°C to +85°C in ordinary and explosive atmospheres, represent the state of the art in harsh-environment heating control. Our roadmap pushes into territory where the easy reference designs don't exist. We innovate and elevate customer expectations of the industry across the domains of reliability, safety and user experience, while satisfying the certification burden that comes with deploying power switching control hardware into hazardous locations.
This is an ownership role. You'll drive the full hardware arc from architecture through schematic, layout, bring-up, DVT, and manufacturing handoff on a small team where every engineer's work ships to real products in the field.
You'll thrive here if you:
- Are energized by electronics problems that don't have a clean reference design to copy.
- Can own a board from blank schematic to production release without handholding, and debug hardware failures at the signal level when bring-up doesn't go as planned.
- Understand that industrial certification isn't a paperwork exercise, it's a design constraint that has to be baked in from schematic review and considered throughout.
- Want to work on technology that's genuinely novel, not re-implementing a reference design for the fifth time.
- Leverage AI tools as a force multiplier for documentation, simulation cross-check, datasheet mining, etc., while applying rigorous engineering judgment to anything that touches a physical product.
What You'll Do
- Analog and mixed-signal design: Design isolated and non-isolated signal conditioning, precision current and voltage sensing, ground fault monitoring, analog front-ends for RTD/thermocouple/4-20mA inputs, and relay output stages that meet industrial operating requirements.
- PCB design: Own complete PCB designs in Altium Designer, schematic capture through layout, with proper attention to high-voltage creepage/clearance, switching node containment, thermal dissipation, EMC, and other certification requirements.
- Bring-up and debug: Own board bring-up from first power-on through full functional verification. Debug switching converter instability, magnetics saturation, ground loops, EMC failures, and hardware-firmware interface issues with a smart instrumentation and a systematic approach.
- Valdiation Testing: Design validation tests which are quickly, scientifically and practically repeatable. Document the process end-to-end including setup and results for varied audiences.
- Certification: Collaborate with the certifications team through CSA, UL, ATEX, and EMC testing. Understand what drives failures, propose design corrections, and see them through to approval.
- Manufacturing handoff: Deliver complete design packages including schematics, BOMs, layout, Gerbers, test specs, assembly notes that a contract manufacturer can build from without coming back with questions.
- Firmware collaboration: Define hardware/software interfaces with embedded engineers: power sequencing, ADC calibration, PWM control interfaces, interrupt schemes. Enough firmware awareness to make integration clean.
- Mentorship: Raise the capability of the team. Your depth in electronics should be contagious.
What You Bring
- 7-15 years of hands-on experience designing and delivering production-level electronics hardware.
- Proficiency in Altium Designer for full schematic capture and PCB layout with production tape-out experience.
- Working knowledge of simulation tools: SPICE variants (LTspice, SIMetrix, PSIM, or equivalent) for validation and stability analysis of new designs.
- Solid understanding of EMC design: common-mode vs. differential-mode noise, filter design, layout containment of switching loops, chassis and signal ground separation.
- Experience designing for industrial operating conditions: -40 to +85°C ambient, high-voltage isolation (creepage/clearance to IEC 60664), extended component ratings, and long-term field reliability.
- Hands-on debug capability: oscilloscope (differential probe, current probe), bench load, power analyzer, impedance analyzer
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
- AI Tool Fluency with Engineering Judgment: Actively uses best available tools to accelerate work that should be accelerated without relinquishing human judgment.
Bonus Points For
- Proficiency with C and C++ for microcontroller targets (ARM Cortex-M, STM32, or similar) as well as Python for test, RTOS environments (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or equivalent).
- Solid understanding of embedded fundamentals: interrupts, timers, DMA, GPIO, UART/SPI/I2C, ADC/DAC.
- Experience with hazardous location (HazLoc) certification - IEC 60079, ATEX, CSA Class I Division 1 & 2, specifically the constraints it places on power conversion design (energy storage limits, ignition risk analysis).
- Familiarity with functional safety (IEC 61508, SIL 2) and what SIL 2 capable power architecture looks like in practice.
Why You'll Love Working at Thermon
- Novel Problems: The work you'll do here has no off-the-shelf solution. You'll be doing original engineering.
- Full Ownership: You own it from architecture to production. Your fingerprints are on every board in the field.
- Global Impact: Your designs run inside critical infrastructure across the world, in conditions most engineers never have to design for.
- Small Team, Real Velocity: Small team, direct access to decision-makers, high trust.
- Austin-Based: Work in one of the most vibrant tech hubs in the country.
- Competitive Compensation: Competitive salary, health coverage, 401(k) with match, and more.
