Role summary:
The Staff, Software Engineer plays a critical role in delivering scalable platform capabilities and driving the full software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance. This position requires expertise in cloud-native architecture, AI/ML integration, and software design patterns to build resilient, modular solutions. The role involves technical leadership, mentoring, and collaboration across teams to ensure alignment with business goals and engineering excellence. The engineer applies data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement practices to enhance productivity and deliver high-quality software solutions. They would lead and direct large-scale, complex, cross-functional projects by reviewing project requirements, translating requirements into technical solutions.
About the team:
Walmart’s Advertising Technology group connects supplier brands with retail shoppers at unmatched scale. Our engineers and data scientists build high-performance ad serving and data platforms that process massive volumes of requests, user activity, and transaction data. We apply machine learning, optimization, and large-scale distributed systems to deliver highly relevant advertising experiences for customers and measurable value for advertisers. This role is part of the Sponsored Ads engineering team, building next-generation ad relevance, retrieval, ranking, and ML infrastructure. You will own critical components, influence architecture and technology choices, and collaborate across Walmart Connect to deliver performance, reliability, and impact at scale.
What you'll do:

• Lead the design and delivery of large scale software, ML infrastructure, and platform capabilities.
• Translate product and business strategy into scalable, resilient, maintainable architectures and long term technical roadmaps.
• Own coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, performance optimization, and operational excellence.
• Drive system design reviews, architectural decisions, and root cause analysis for complex production and reliability issues.
• Build cloud native platforms, ML frameworks, model serving capabilities, and AI driven applications supporting automation and intelligent workflows.
• Mentor engineers, influence technical direction, raise engineering standards, and partner across product, data science, and engineering teams to deliver high performance solutions at scale.

What you'll bring:

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Strong experience in AdTech, Search, relevance, or large scale distributed systems.
• Expertise building highly available, fault tolerant, cloud native services using microservices, containers, APIs, and automation.
• Hands on proficiency in Java or another object oriented language, Spring, NoSQL, Kafka, Spark, and modern data platforms.
• Experience partnering with Data Science teams to productionize and serve ML models in real time.
• Exceptional analytical reasoning, debugging, and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated architecture leadership, mentorship, communication, collaboration, and commitment to engineering excellence.

Bellevue, Washington US-11663: The annual salary range for this position is $132,000.00 - $264,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
